1.) Why are living organisms classified?
Answer :The living organisms are classified into various classifications. The need of classification is large diversity among living organisms, because it is impossible to study all the living organisms in separate manner, so grouping of organisms according to their characteristics, habitat and mode of nutrition. Classification of those living organisms into one group, which have similar characteristics and other living organisms into other group because they differ into their characteristics. So classification of living organisms is essential to study all the organisms in easy manner and to avoid confusion.
2.) Why are the classification systems changing every now and then?
Answer :The classification systems changing every now and then because great diversity in living organism such as in microorganisms bacteria, viruses, fungus and in animals and plants also. The variety of living organisms are not limited. As the new characteristics and anatomical characters, adaptation of animals are still under research and many characteristics have been invented, so for new properties of living organisms the classification systems changing every now and then.
3.) What different criteria would you choose to classify people that you meet often?
Answer : According to me, I will choose different criteria to classify people that we meet often such as we can classify organisms according to their body characteristics such as height, weight. The habitat that is living place of organism is also a part of classification. We often classify organisms on the basis of their mode of nutrition, like every living organism have different mode of nutrition such as some are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. So these classification criteria we can use to classify the organisms.
4.) What do we learn from identification of individuals and populations?
Answer : To identify particular individual and population we must have knowledge about their characteristics, that individual and population which have same characteristics are classified in the same class and those have different characteristics are classified into other class. So, according to their characteristics scientist have classify living organisms into different categories that we learnt from system of identification.
5.) Given below is the scientific name of Mango. Identify the correctly written name.
Mangifera Indica

Answer : The correct scientific name of mango is Mangifera indica.
6.) Define a taxon. Give some examples of taxa at different hierarchical levels.
Answer : Taxon can be termed as the unit of classification. Classification of living organisms, it is at different levels. Therefore the levels of classification can be described in such a manner :
Kingdom > Phylum > Class> Order > Family > Genus > Species.
Every living organism can be classified with the help of hierarchical levels. For example : The insect are also classified in the same manner.

7.) Can you identify the correct sequence of taxonomical categories? (a) Species Order Phylum Kingdom (b) Genus Species Order Kingdom (c) Species Genus Order Phylum
Answer : As we know the sequence of taxonomical categories :
Kingdom > Phylum > Class> Order > Family > Genus > Species. According to this hierarchical levels, the option A and C are correct.
8.) Try to collect all the currently accepted meanings for the word ‘species’. Discuss with your teacher the meaning of species in case of higher plants and animals on one hand, and bacteria on the other hand.
Answer : The species can be defined in various ways : Species is group of similar organisms classified into one category. Species can also be defined as a basic unit of classification or basic unit of taxonomy. Species is group of interbreeding organisms. So these are meanings of species.
9.) Define and understand the following terms: (i) Phylum (ii) Class (iii) Family (iv) Order (v) Genus
Answer :
(i) Phylum : Phylum is a group of classification, which is situated below the kingdom and above the class. All the organisms in the phylum are classified according to either their body segmented or not, presence of notochord under such characteristic. Examples of phylum are Porifera and Platyhelminthes.
(ii) Class : Class is a taxonomic rank, which is present in between phylum and family. The very well known example of class is mammalia. In case of plants also there is hierarchical level class is present. In plants to identify the class of plants the suffix -opsida is used. For example : Magnoliopsida that is the class of mango plant.
(iii) Family : It is taxonomic rank placed in between order and genus. It can be defined as a group of related genus and species called as family. In case of animals, for family suffix is used -idea for example : The family of dogs called Canidae and in plants for family suffix is used :-aceae For example : The orchid plant family called Orchidaceae.
(iv) Order : The order is placed in between class and family. Generally order is a group of related family, genus and species characteristics. For example order classification in animals is Carnivora, all the animals which eat other animal parts are included under one order. In case of plants for the order suffix -ales is used. For example :The order of rose plant called Rosales.
(v) Genus : The group of related species called as Genus. It is place in between family and species. For example genus of rose plant called Rosa. Those of genus of dog called Canis.
10.) How is a key helpful in the identification and classification of an organism?
Answer : The key that is taxonomical key is helpful in the identification and classification of an organism. It is based on similarities and dissimilarity of organisms, according to their characteristics they are classified, so that if we study characteristics of particular category then the information and identifying criteria we can understand and get classification of every organisms.
11.) Illustrate the taxonomical hierarchy with suitable examples of a plant and ananimal ?
Answer : Taxonomical hierarchy is the classification of living organisms based on their similarities and differences. To classify the living organisms the scientist have developed the taxonomical hierarchy. The sequence of taxonomical hierarchy are as follows :
Kingdom > Phylum > Class> Order > Family > Genus > Species.So let’s discuss taxonomical hierarchical level of plants and animals.
