1.) Has Lushkoff become a beggar by circumstance or by choice?

Answer:

Lushkoff became a beggar by circumstances as he was the victim of the conspiracy of his own fate and behavior. He was a singer by profession in Russian choir. He was sent away from that choir for his drinking habit.

2.) What reasons does he give to Sergei for his telling lies?

Answer:

Lushkoff told lie about his profession, that he was a teacher or a student and was the victim of circumstances to get sympathy and alms from people. People would not be ready to help him if they came to know about the fact that Lushkoff lost his job and became a beggar only for his drinking habit.

3.) Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then, does he agree to chop wood for Sergei?

Answer:

No, Lushkoff was not a willing worker.

He did the work finally as he promised to Sergei. He had been trapped by his own word and out of shame he did it.

4.) Sergei says, “I am happy that my words have taken effect.” Why does he say so? Is he right in saying this?

Answer:

Sergei said this as Lushkoff took interest on all his works and was doing his responsibilities properly. He fulfilled his responsibility as a wood cutter and all those works given by Sergei to him with utmost care. Moreover he became ready to go to Sergei’s friend to get the job of coping note. If Sergei did not help him to pull Lushkoff out from his darkness he would never became a notary and spent rest of life as a beggar.

5.) Lushkoff is earning thirty five roubles a month. How is he obliged to Sergei for this?

Answer:

It was Sergei who pulled Lushkoff out of the darkness of beggary. He gave him job first as a wood cutter and finally helped him to get the job of coping note under his friend. This had turned his fate and he became notary with thirty five roubles per month as a salary. So, after two years when he met with Sergei he offered his gratefulness to him.

6.) During their conversation Lushkoff reveals that Sergei’s cook, Olga, is responsible for the positive change in him. How has Olga saved Lushkoff?

Answer:

Though Sergei helped Lushkoff a lot to pull him out from the darkness but Olaga, the cook of Sergei, was actually responsible for his trance formation and success. She used to insult him, called him miserable creature, unlucky man, drunkard, unhappy fellow. Her negative comments always gave him indulgence to work better and prove himself. She suffered a lot and shaded many tears for his sale. She used to chop woods for him. Lushkoff changed only to owe her words and noble deeds. Because of her change took place in his heart.
