I.) Answer these questions in one or two sentences each. (The paragraph numbers within brackets provide clues to the answers.)

1.) Why was the ‘holy man’ who gave Santosh’s mother his blessings surprised? (1)

Answer:

The holy man was surprised because he did not expect such answer from Santosh’s grandmother. It was a time when girl child was not happily welcomed by the society. At that time the society was biased towards having male child over a female one. And it was unexpected for the holy man that belonging from that society they still want a girl child.

 2.) Give an example to show that even as a young girl Santosh was not ready to accept anything unreasonable. (2)

Answer:

The meaning of Santosh was “Contentment”. But she was not always content with place in a traditional way of life. She always liked to live life on her own terms. She likes to wear sports dresses instead of traditional dresses.

3.) Why was Santosh sent to the local school? (3)

Answer:

Santosh was send to the village school only because of the prevailing custom of their family.

4.) When did she leave home for Delhi, and why? (4)

Answer:

Santosh left home to get the admission in the school of Delhi. She wanted to study farther rather getting married at the age of sixteen like other girls of their village. She did not get any support from her parents initially but later they supported her.

 5.) Why did Santosh’s parents agree to pay for her schooling in Delhi? What mental qualities of Santosh are brought into light by this incident? (4)

Answer:

Santosh’s parents agreed to pay for her schooling in Delhi as she had decided to do part time job apart from studies to get school fees.

From this incident we came to know about her determination and focused mind.

 1.) How did Santosh begin to climb mountains?

Answer:

While living at the Kasturba hostel, near Aravalli hills, she used to see the villagers climbing up the hills everyday and disappearing behind it. She became inquisitive and to solve the mystery one day she joined the group of mountaineers. That was her first step towards mountaineering.

2.) What incidents during the Everest expedition show Santosh’s concern for her team-mates?

Answer:

Santosh tried to save one of her fellow climbers. Though her first attempt was failed, but he helped to save the life of another fellow climber, named Mohan Singh by sharing her oxygen cylinder.

 3.) What shows her concern for the environment?

Answer:

Santosh had brought down 500 kilograms of garbage from the Himalaya to save the environment.

 4.) How does she describe her feelings at the summit of the Everest?

Answer:

While recollecting memory of the achievement of the Mt. Everest Santosh started that she was at the top of the world. The moment was unbelievably for her when she hoisted the Indian Flag on the top of the roof of the world, which was the Mt. Everest. She felt proud to be an Indian.

 5.) Santosh Yadav got into the record books both times she scaled Mt Everest. What were the reasons for this?

Answer:

Santosh Yadav got into the record books both times she scaled Mt. Everest first time she was the youngest woman mountaineer, who scaled Mt. Everest and second time she come to the record book as she was the first woman in the world, who climbed Mt.Everest twice.
