Ans- The major nutrients present in our food are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. It also includes dietary fibres and water.

1.) The nutrients which mainly give energy to the body- carbohydrates and fats.

2.) The nutrients that are needed for growth and maintenance of our body- proteins and minerals.

3.) A vitamin required for maintaining good eyesight- vitamin A.

4.) A mineral that is required for keeping our bones healthy – calcium.

1.) Fats- fish, meat.

2.) Starch- potatoes, rice.

Q1. What is meant by nutrients? What are the nutrients needed to human body?

Ans- Nutrients are the some components which are needed to the human body for healthy life and healthy growth. The nutrients are obtained by plants animals from the food which we eat. The ingredients which we eat contain all nutrients. The nutrients are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins and the additional nutrients are required which is dietary fibre and water to the human body. The nutrients have major role in each food ingredient.

Q2. How is starch tested?

Ans- Starch is one of the nutrient which is necessary for body. Starch is in the form of carbohydrates which is included in our diet. There is process for testing the starch i.e. starch is present in the particular food or not.

The process includes some steps as follows:-

  • Take small quantity of food ingredient.
  • Put 2-3 drops of iodine solution on ingredient.
  • Observe the colour change.
  • The colour turns into blue or black then there is presence of starch in that particular ingredient.

In this way the starch is tested.

Q4. Write procedure of protein testing.

Ans- Protein is the most essential nutrient which we need in our daily diet for healthy growth. Proteins are rich in foods like meat, boiled egg etc. There is a procedure for testing that there is a presence of protein in the food item or not. The steps in protein testing includes the following procedure:

  • Take some quantity of food it should be solid.
  • Then make paste or crush the food item or make it I powder form.
  • Grind the food item and take small amount in a test tube.
  • Add 10 drops of water and shake the test tube.
  • Then with help of dropper add 2 drops of copper sulfate and then add 10 drops of caustic soda.
  • Shake the test tube for few minutes.
  • Then observe the colour change.
  • If the colour turns into violet then there is presence of protein in the food item.

Q5. What are the sources of protein?

Ans- The protein is very important nutrient which we need in our diet. There are two different sources of protein, by plants and animals.

1.) Sources by plants:- The sources by plants i.e. the protein food obtained from plants include grams, beans, tur dal, soyabeans, peas and green gram.

2.) Sources by animals:- The sources by animals i.e. the protein food obtained from animals include milk, eggs, meat, paneer.

Q6. Why our body need dietary fibres?

Ans- The nutrients we all need are proteins , carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins besides these we also need dietary fibres and water for good and healthy growth. Dietary fibre is also known as roughage. This dietary fibres play most important role which keeps human body healthy. It includes whole grains, pulses, fresh fruits, vegetables. These are the sources for dietary fibres. Dietary fibre is not a nutrient but it is essential for the body which helps to get rid of undigested food. Hence dietary fibres are essential and needed for healthy growth.

Ans- For the good health and growth we need to take all the nutrients on the food. The food which contains all the nutrients, roughage and water is called as balanced diet. The balanced diet is very important for the person to be healthy without any deficiency. The good amount of roughage and water is needed in balanced diet. The balanced diet includes pulses, grains, soya bean, sprouted seeds etc. The balanced diet can be easily obtained without any expenses. Hence balanced diet is the important component for healthy growth.
