Q1. Why we need to separate different components of mixture? Give two examples.

Ans- Some substances are separated for different uses. We need to separate different components of mixture to separate two different components which are useful, to separate or remove non useful substance and to remove impurities. For these purposes we need to separate different components of mixture. For e.g. separation of tea leaves from tea and separation of grains from stalk.

Q2. What is winnowing? Where is it used?

Ans- Winnowing is the method in which the components are separated from mixture. This method is used in separation of heavier and lighter components of a mixture by wind or by blowing air. This method is commonly used by farmers to separate heavier seeds of grain from lighter husk particles. This is done by wind the husk particles are carried away by wind.

Q3. How will you separate husk or dirt particles from given sample of pulses before cooking.

Ans- We need to separate some substance or components from mixture for our better useful components. For separation of husk or dirt particles from given sample of pulses we need to do winnowing process by which we can separate the husk or dirt particles. By this the pulses are separated on side and husk is separated by other side. The separated pulses can be used for cooking and husk is used for cows.

Q4. What is sieving? Where it is used?

Ans- Sieving is the method used to separate the impurities in the flour. Sieving allows the fine particles of flour to pass away from sieve and the bigger particles remain on the top of sieve. Sieving is used in many ways one is in the separation of impurities in flour and other one the pebbles are separated from stones and sand by sieving.

Q5. How will you separate sand and water from their mixture?

Ans- The sand and water is separated by method called decantation. In this method the solid material is left and the water is separated. When there is mixture of sand and water, for separation of sand and water first water is removed and the sand is left over.

Q6. Is it possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour? If yes, how will u do it?

Ans- Yes it is possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour. This is done by sieving process. By sieving the sugar mixed with the flour is separated.

Q7. How would you obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water?

Ans- By the process of filteration clear water is obtained from a sample of muddy water. In filteration process the filter paper is used, this filter paper has small pores which filters the impurities of mud and gives clear water. The filter paper is folded in cone shape and fixed on to the funnel. The muddy water is poured into the funnel with filter paper and the clear water is obtained.

Ans- To prepare lemonade we add lemon juice and sugar. To cool it we add ice cubes. Ice cubes should be added after dissolving the sugar. Before adding ice the sugar has more possibility to dissolve.

When the sea water is allowed to stand in shallow pits, by sunlight the water gets heated and slowly turns into water vapour through evaporation. The salt completely lives behind after few days due to evaporation. The common salt is obtained further by purification of all salt mixtures. Thus by evaporation method the salt is obtained from seawater.
