SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS –
1.) What is a globe .define.
ANSWER-
A globe is a model of the Earth that depicts the form, lands, oceans, distances, and directions of the Earth as they genuinely relate to one another.
2.) What do you mean by equator ?
ANSWER-
An equator is an imaginary line running on the globe , which divides the globe into two equal parts . In which the Northern half of the globe is known as Northern Hemisphere and the southern half is known as Southern Hemisphere .
3.) Describe parallels of latitude ?
Answer-
All parallel circles from the equator up to the poles are known as parallels of latitudes . Latitudes are generally measured in degrees. The zero degree latitude is represented by equator .
4.) Define some important parallels of latitudes.
ANSWER-
Keeping aside the equator , the North Pole , the South Pole , the other four parallels are –
– Tropic of cancer in Northern Hemisphere
– Tropic of Capricon in Southern Hemisphere
– Arctic Circle
-Antarctic Circle
5.) What is Torrid Zone ?
ANSWER-
When the mid-day sun is exactly overhead atleast once a year and on all latitudes between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn because of which the area receives maximum heat and is known as Torrid Zone .
6.) Give a brief about temperate zone ?
ANSWER-
When the areas bounded by Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the Northern Hemisphere , and the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle in the Southern Hemisphere , which have moderate tempratures . They are known as Temprate Zones .
7.) Describe about Frigid Zones?
ANSWER-
In Frigid Zones the areas lying between the Arctic Circle and North Pole in Northern Hemisphere and Antarctic Circle and South Pole in Southern Hemisphere , are cold enough . The sun here does not rise above the Horizon and its rays are slanting which is why they provide less heat .
8.) What is Prime Meridian ?
ANSWER-
When all countries decided that the count should begin from the meridian which passed through Greenwich , where British Royal Observatory is located . The meridian is known as Prime Meridian . The value of it is 0 degree longitude . the earth is divided into two equal parts by Prime Meridian and 180 degree meridian .
9.) What do you mean by latitudes ?
ANSWER-
Parallels of latitude are all parallel circles from the equator to the poles. There are 180° latitudes in total, 90° in the north and 90° in the south.
10.) Give a brief description about latitudes and longitudes ?
ANSWER-
Degrees are used to express latitudes and longitudes. Increments of less than one degree, on the other hand, can be stated as a decimal or in minutes and seconds. A degree has 60 minutes while a minute has 60 seconds. Longitudes are denoted by an E or W for east or west. Latitudes are denoted by the letters N or S, which stand for north or south.
Long Answer questions
1) What is a globe? Write a brief about it.
Ans. A globe is a true model (miniature form) of the earth. Globes may be of varying size and type. The globe is not fixed. It can be rotated in the same way as a top spin or a potter’s wheel is rotated. On the globe, countries, continents and oceans are shown in their correct size. A needle is fixed through the globe in a tilted manner, which is called its axis. Two points on th4e globe through which the needle passes are two poles- North pole and South pole. The globe can be moved around this needle from west to east.
2) Give a brief note on the importance of the equator.
Ans. An equator is an imaginary line that divides the earth into two equal hemispheres- the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. Therefore the equator is an imaginary circular line and is a very important reference point to locate places on the earth. All parallel circles from the equator up to the poles are called parallels or latitudes. The equator represents the zero degree latitude. All such parallels north of the latitude are called ‘north latitudes’. Similarly, all latitudes south of the equator are called ‘south latitudes’
3) Write a short note on the Heat zones of the Earth.
Ans. The mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes in between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. This area receives the maximum heat and is called the Torrid zone. The angle of the sun’s rays goes on decreasing towards the poles. As such, the areas bounded by the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic circle in the northern Hemisphere, and the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic circle in the southern hemisphere, have moderate temperatures and are therefore called Temperate Zones. Areas lying between the Arctic circle and the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere, are very cold. It is because the sun does not rise much above the horizon. Therefore, its rays are always slanting ad provide less heat. These are, therefore, called Frigid Zones.
4) Write a short note on longitudes.
Ans. The lines of references that that tell us how far east or west are places from a given line of reference running from north pole to south pole are called meridians of longitude and the distances between them are measured in ‘degrees of longitudes.’ Each degree is further divided into minutes, and minutes, and minutes into seconds. They are semi-circles and the distance between them decreases steadily polewards until it becomes zero at the poles, where all the meridians meet.
5) Write a short note on characteristics of meridians.
Ans. All meridians are of equal lengths. Thus, it was difficult to number the meridians.
Hence, all countries decided that the count should begin from the meridian which passed through Greenwich, where the British Royal Observatory is located. This meridian is called the Prime Meridian. Its value is 0 degree longitude and from it we count 180 degree eastwards and 180 degree westwards. The Prime Meridian and the 180 degree meridian divide the earth into two equal halves.
6) Write the reason stating why do we have standard time?
Ans. The local time of places which are on different meridians are bound to differ. For example, it will be difficult to prepare a time-table for trains which cross several longitudes. In India for instance there will be a difference of about 1 hour 45 minutes in the local time of Dwarka in Gujarat and Dibrugarh in Assam. It is therefore necessary to adopt a local time of some central meridian of a country as the standard time of the country. In India longitude of 82 ½ degree east is treated as the standard meridian. This meridian is taken as the standard taken as the standard time for the whole country. It is known as the Indian Standard Time
(IST).
