NCERT Class 6 English Grammar Simple Tense
NCERT Class 6 English Grammar Simple Tense: The present, past, and future tenses of a verb are the only ones that exist.
The present tense describes a situation or activity that is happening now.
The past tense shows a finished activity or condition in the past. The future tense shows an event or circumstance that will happen in the future.
1) Present Simple tense – Example- I go to school.
2) Past Simple tense – Example – I went to school.
3) Future Simple tense – Example – I will go to school.
1.) Present Simple tense
An event or activity that is currently taking place is described in the present tense.
Positive –
Subject + base form of the verb or verb+s/es (if needed) + remainder of the sentence.
Example- You look handsome.
He looks handsome.
I sing an English song.
She takes her pet for a walk every morning.
Negative -Subject + Do not/Don’t/Does not/Doesn’t + Verb in the base (first) form + Remainder
Example- You do not look handsome.
He does not look handsome.
I do not sing an English song.
She does not take her pet for a walk every morning.
Interrogative – Do/Does + Subject + Verb
Do you look handsome?
Does he look handsome?
Do I sing an English song?
Does she take her pet for a walk every morning?
Negative Interrogative – Don’t/Doesn’t + Subject + Verb
Don’t you look handsome?
Doesn’t he look handsome?
Don’t I sing an English song?
Doesn’t she take her pet for a walk every morning?
2.) Past Simple tense
The past tense shows a finished action or condition from the past.
Positive – Subject + Verb in the past form (base form of the verb + ed/d for regular verbs or past tense form of the irregular verbs)
Example- I wrote a story for childrens.
He went to the gym.
We took water.
Negative – Subject + Didn’t (Did Not)+ Verb in the base form
Example- I didn’t write a story for childrens.
He didn’t go to the gym.
We didn’t take water.
Interrogative – Did + Subject + Verb in the base form +the remainder of the sentence.
Example- Did I write a story for childrens.
Did he go to the gym?
Did we take water?
Negative Interrogative – Didn’t + Subject + Verb in the base form +the remainder of the sentence.
Example- Didn’t I write a story for childrens.
Didn’t he go to the gym?
Didn’t we take water?
3.) Future Simple tense
The future tense describes anything that will occur in the future.
Positive -Subject + Helping verb (will) + First or base form of the verb + the remainder of the sentence.
Example- I will start writing a book.
He will go to the gym.
We shall take water.
Negative – Subject + Will not/Won’t + First or base form of the verb + the remainder of the sentence.
Example- I will not start writing a book.
He will not go to the gym.
We shall not take water.
Interrogative – Will + Subject + First or base form of the verb + the remainder of the sentence.
Example- Will I start writing a book?
Will he go to the gym?
Shall we take water ?
Negative Interrogative – Will/ Shall + Subject + not + First or base form of the verb + the remainder of the sentence or
Won’t/Shan’t + Subject + First or base form of the verb + the remainder of the sentence.
Example- Will I not start writing a book?
Will he not go to the gym?
Shall we not take water ?
OR
Won’t I start writing a book?
Won’t he go to the gym?
Shan’t we take water ?
Use of First or base form of Verb (V1)
1.) In the present indefinite tense, we use V1
Example- I write a letter.
2.) When speaking about general truths, we use V1.
Example- The sun rises in the east.
A magnet attracts iron.
3.) We use V1 to talk about things repeatedly as a habit or custom.
Example- Sahil walks everyday.
Prachi eats healthy food.
4.) Use of do/did/does in negative and interrogative sentences.
Example- Do you like apples?
Does she write a poem?
Did he finish his homework?
She doesn’t like old books.
You do not play cricket.
