NCERT Class 6 English Grammar Continuous Tenses
NCERT Class 6 English Grammar Continuous Tenses: The present continuous tense refers to acts or events that are already in progress when we speak about them.
There are 3 types of continuous tenses,
1) Present Continuous tense
2) Past Continuous tense
3) Future Continuous tense
1) Present Continuous tense
Present Continuous tense structure
Positive – Subject + am/is/are + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence.
Example- She is living in a city.
I am studying English literature.
They are working on a project.
Negative – Subject + am/is/are + not + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence
Example- She is not living in a city.
I am not studying English literature.
They are not working on a project.
Interrogative – Am/is/are + subject + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence
Example- Is she living in a city?
Am I studying English literature?
Are they working on a project?
Negative Interrogative – Isn’t/aren’t + subject + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence or
Am/is/are + subject + not + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence
Example- Is she not living in a city?/ Isn’t she living in a city?
Am I not studying English literature?
Are they not working on a project?/ Aren’t they working on a project?
2) Past Continuous tense
The past continuous tense refers to or indicates acts or events that were happening for a specific period of time in the past.
The past continuous of any verb is made up of two parts : the past tense of the verb “to be” (was/were), and the base of the main verb +ing.
Past Continuous tense structure –
Positive – Subject + was/were + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence.
Example-
I was working on a project.
We were performing on a stage.
They were listening to music.
You were watching a movie.
Negative – Subject + was/were + not + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence.
Example-
I was not working on a project.
We were not performing on a stage.
They were not listening to music.
You were not watching a movie.
Interrogative – Was/were + subject + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence.
Example-
Was I working on a project?
Were we performing on a stage?
Were they listening to music?
Were you watching a movie?
Negative Interrogative –
Was/were + subject + not + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence or
Wasn’t/weren’t + subject + present participle (verb+ing) + the remainder of the sentence
Was I not working on a project? / Wasn’t I working on a project?
Were we not performing on a stage? / Weren’t we performing on a stage?
Were they not listening to music? / Weren’t they listening to music?
Were you not watching a movie? / Weren’t you watching a movie?
3) Future Continuous tense
The future continuous tense is a verb tense that indicates an activity happening over a period of time in the future.
Future Continuous tense structure –
Positive- Subject + will + be + present participle (verb+ing) + the rest of the sentence.
Example- I will be attending today’s lecture.
She will be doing her homework.
They will be participating in a contest.
Negative – Subject + will + not + be + present participle (verb+ing) + the rest of the sentence.
Example- I will not be attending today’s lecture.
She will not be doing her homework.
They will not be participating in a contest.
Interrogative – Will+ subject +be + present participle (verb+ing) + the rest of the sentence
Example- Will I be attending today’s lecture?
Will she be doing her homework?
Will they be participating in a contest?
Negative Interrogative –
Will + Subject + not + be + present participle (verb+ing) + the rest of the sentence
Won’t + Subject + be + present participle (verb+ing) + the rest of the sentence
Example- Will I not be attending today’s lecture?
Will she not be doing her homework?
Will they not be participating in a contest?
Or
Won’t I be attending today’s lecture?
Won’t she be doing her homework?
Won’t they be participating in a contest?
