Ans) A large number of international leaders attended the inauguration to celebrate the end of apartheid policy and the freedom of South Africa.

It’s a triumph over fear and courage to overcome it.

(2) What does Mandela mean when he says he is “simply the sum of all those African patriots” who had gone before him?

Ans) Nelson Mandela meant to say that he took all the courage and power to fight for freedom from the African patriots who had gone before him.

Oliver Tambos, the Walter Sisulus, the Chief Luthulis, the Yusuf Dadoos, the Bram Fischers, the Robert Sobukwes — men of such extraordinary courage, wisdom and generosity had gone before him.

(3) Would you agree that the “depths of oppression” create “heights of character”? How does Mandela illustrate this? Can you add your own examples to this argument?

Ans) Mandela illustrated this idea by saying that the policy of apartheid created a deep and lasting wound in his country and his people. This decades of oppression and brutality gave birth to an extraordinary courage, wisdom and generosity among them.

(4) How did Mandela’s understanding of freedom change with age and experience?

Ans) Nelson Mandela was born with a concept of Freedom in every way-freedom to run in the fields near my mother’s hut, free to swim in the clear stream that ran through my village, free to roast mealies under the stars and ride the broad backs of slow-moving bulls. But slowly his understanding of freedom change with age and experience. It became an illusion for him after boyhood. He understood that he was born with a hunger to be free.

(5) How did Mandela’s ‘hunger for freedom’ change his life?

Ans- Mandela’s ‘hunger for freedom’ changed his life. At first it had only influenced his personal life but later he started working for the citizen of South Africa. As a young man in Johannesburg, he started working to earn the basic and honourable freedoms of achieving personal potential,of marrying and having a family.He joined the African National Congress (ANC) to bring back the basic rightsof black coloured people. The hunger for freedom transformed him from a frightened young man into a bold one,a law-abiding attorney to a criminal, a family-loving husband into a man without a home and a life-loving man to a monk.
