Momentum Formula

Momentum Formula

Consider an object of mass ‘m’, and moving with velocity ‘v’ then the position of an object is change.

Basically momentum is product of mass of an object and velocity of an object. Momentum is denoted by ‘P’. It is vector quantity. SI unit of momentum is kg m/s.

P = mV —— (i)

From equation (1) can say that momentum is directly proportional to the mass and velocity of an object. The effect of force depends on a mass and velocity of object. And this property term as ‘momentum’.

Numericals on Momentum

(1) A car at mass 500 kg is with velocity 13 m/s. Calculate its momentum.

Solution:

m = 500 kg

v = 13 m/s

Momentum = mass × velocity

= 500 × 13

P = 6500 kg m/s

(2) A body of mass 20 kg moving with constant acceleration of 8 m/s2.

Now calculate what is change in momentum in 8 sec?

Solution:

m = 20 kg

a = 8 m/s2

Change in momentum after time

T = 8 sec

(△p) = ?

We know that formula of force

F = m × a

F = 20×8

F = 160 N

From Newton 2nd law of motion

F = △p/t

△P = f × t

△P = 160 × 8

△P = 1280 kg. m/s

The change of momentum of body 1280 kg. m/s
