Essay on Mob Lynching for Class 10, 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)

Mob lynching refers to the illegal and unethical activity committed by a crowd of people who mauls a human being to death. The activity is attempted out of aggression, either based on any evidence or out of any assumption. It is believed by the mobs that they are punishing the criminal as it is beyond the potential of the laws to take stern actions. They willingly take the law into their own hands and act in an intolerant way without subjecting the criminal to the nads of the law.

Causes of mob lynching:

As stated before mob lynching is an act which is based on rumour or any false information. There are various reasons for mob lynching, a few of which are discussed below as follows:

Absence of strict administration

One of the major causes of mob lynching is the failure of the administration and the judiciary. Given the status of the judiciary in India, it is believed that offenders go unnoticed. It is also noted that heinous crimes like rape take years to get justice served as is the case of Nirbhaya. In such cases, when any serious crime like rape takes place, people or the mob takes the law into their hands to punish the criminal without further delay.

Views on biasedness

Mob lynching takes place when there is an emergence of biasedness against any social group, caste or race. Even after 75 years of Independence, Dalits are not freed from the bondage of misery. In India, a 30-year-old sanitary worker, Krishna Dusamad was lynched at his workplace as he was suspected of being a thief.

Moreover, there is also an instance where two Muslim men were suspected of stealing cows and annihilated by the crowd in the Nagaon discredit of Assam.

Effects of mob lynching:

Penalising an individual without the absence of any legal authority for any crime leads to positive and negative impacts as well. From the positive aspect, it shows that society works in cohesion against a crime in the absence of strict or late judicial power. In other words, it denotes the concept of unity in diversity.

Nevertheless, it ignites anger, agitation and aggression among the masses who tend to be violent and take the law into their own hands.

In addition, the psychology of the individual’s family who is not guilty of the crime is affected by the loss of a loved one. Taking action against human rights also violates the constitution. The economy is also negatively influenced as it hampers domestic and foreign investment. It also promotes anger and violence between different castes, creeds and religions thereby giving rise to communalism and vengeance.

Law: In a developing country like India, mob lynching has become a serious concern. The National campaign against mob lynching has been launched under the name MASUKA. According to the law, lynching is regarded as an offence and a non-bailable act. The perpetrators connected will be imprisoned for a lifetime for their acts of barbarism. This law is drafted by Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of BR Ambedkar in response to the mob lynching.

Conclusion: In conclusion, it can be said that mob lynching is an atrocious act that happens either out of suspicion or when the administration fails to take speedy action. This violent act is regarded as an act of vengeance which mostly impacts society negatively. It is noticed that it gives rise to anti-religious and anti caste feelings. However, in some cases, like rape, this act can be regarded as a speedy action as the Indian judiciary delays in taking appropriate action against the rapists.
