(5) IDL brings coordination in which of   the following?

(a) GPS system    (b) Defence departments    (c) Transportation schedules    (d) Determining the hemisphere

Ans)(c) Transportation schedules

Q 3. Give geographical reasons

(1) IDL is proving to be very useful in today’s times

Ans ) IDL is proving to be very useful in today’s times as it helps to coordinate date and time. It puts its huge input to the rapid global development . It is important as it helps to track of all the calculations of day and time accuratelyin case of global transportation along with airways. It also helps to organise schedules of the worldwide traffic properly.

(2) The day starts in Pacific Ocean on the earth. The IDL passes through the Pacific Ocean. One has to subtract one day while travelling to the East and has to add one day while going to the West.

Q 4. Write in brief:

(1) What considerations have been made while deciding the IDL?

Ans) Considerations have been made while deciding the IDL are-

(1) The direction of travel- The sun rises in the East and sets in the West but the Earth rotates from West to East.So we should consider the direction of travelwhile deciding the IDL.

(2) The current day and date- While travelling from East to West we need to consider the existing day and date even after crossing the IDL. Again while travelling from West to East one needs to add a day to the date.

(2) While crossing the IDL, what changes will you make?

Ans)The IDL passes through the Pacific Ocean. One has to subtract one day while travelling to the East and has to add one day while going to the West.

(3) Why is the IDL not a straight line like the 1800 meridian?

Ans) The IDL is not a straight line like the 1800 meridian. Changes are required in the case of IDL. If it was a straight line it could not cover all the places and we could experience different timings in a single place, which would create bit confusion. So at places, it turns east while at other places, it turns west.

(4) Why doesn’t the IDL pass through land?

Ans) The IDL doesn’t pass through land it has passed through the Pacific Ocean completely. If it passed through land or some islands, the people would have had to follow different dates and timings because dates would have been different on their eastern and western parts.

(5) Why is the IDL considered with respect to the 1800 meridian only?

Ans) The IDL considered with respect to the 1800 meridian only because it is an international convention to change the day and time while crossing this line.
