(1) (a) Explain the relation between continuous rains and landslide. Give reasons.

Ans. Heavy rains are a common cause of landslides. Water acts as a lubricant between soil particles, & strength of saturated ground can be overcome by gravity.

(b) Prepare a chart showing ‘Do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ at the time of earthquake

Do’s

Don’t

(i) Sit on the floor or below the bed. (i) Do not get scared
(ii) Cover your head by any shelter (ii) Do not running here & there
(iii) Avoid using lift (iii) Do not wait below or near tall building
(iv) Park the vehicle at a safe place (iv) Do not use candle lanter or matchbox

 (c) What are the specifications of an earthquake –proof building ?

(d) Explain the effects of landslide.

The effects of landslides:-

i) Displacements of waterfalls, formation of artificial water reservoirs.

ii) Rivers get flooded & change their paths.

iii) Landslide effects the traffic.

iv) There is live & financial loss on a large scale due to landslide.

(e) Is there any relation between dam and earthquake ? Explain.

Ans. i) Dams are often built in active earthquake areas.

ii) The consequence of a dam is high. The effects of a failure or people & structures downstream are dramatic & obvious. A more likely example of earthquake damage would be loss of control of the water supply.

(2) (a.) It is safer to find shelter under things like a bed, table at the time of earthquake.

Ans. Sudden vibration due to earthquake on the earth and earth surface are shaking. The shocks & weaves formed in the interior of the earth spread on the surface in all directions. So there have lot of destructive activities. So under things like bed, table is safest place during the time of earth quake.

(b.) In monsoon, don’t take shelter near hillside.

Ans. In moonsoon, in hillside area is risky zone. Due to heavy rains, water entering in the cracks of hill rock. As a result weight increases. This rocks slide on the slopy region & settle at the lower side which causes landslide. So rainy season is not suitable for staying hill area.

(c.) Don’t use lifts at the time of earthquake.

Ans. Due to earthquake, the earth surface is shaking. The shocks & waves formed in the interior of the earth spread on the surface. As a resuly the electricity disconnected & there is possibility of fire. So during earthquake don’t use lift.

(d.) The foundation of earthquake-proof building is separated from other land.

Ans. Due to avoid tectonic plates vibration during earthquake & avoid impact of the earthquake proof building is speared from the land.

(3.) If a crowd gathers at the place of earthquake, what would be the difficulties in relief work ?

The difficulties of relief work at earth quack place: –

(i) It would be difficult in evacuation

(ii) Aggravation of fear and panic in victims.

(iii) Chances of stamped & theft

(iv) Hindrance to the clearance of debris.

 (4) Make a list of the institutes and organizations who provide help for disaster management. Collect more information about their work.

Name of the institute & organisation Information of their work
(a) National Institute of Disaster management (NIDM) This state agency managing natural disaster in India.
