1.) THE SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS REFORM MOVEMENT BEGAN IN INDIA.
ANS:- Social religious reforms in the 19th century helped in the growth of Indian Nationalism. All the reform movements demanded changes in society through social or educational transformations. There were several reasons for the emergence of social and religious reform movements. They are-
THE CONDITION OF THE WOMEN WAS VERY PATHETIC, THE CONDITION OF DALITS AND THE LOWER CASTES WERE SO DREADFUL.
2.) MAHATMA PHULE CONDUCTED A STRIKE Of BARBERS.
ANS- Mahatma Phule conducted a strike of barbers. He launched the first ever campaign for widow remarriage. He protested against untouchbility. His wife Savitribhai phule also accompanied with him. They took responsibility to protect the Brahmin widow and took bold steps to encourage widow remarriage.
The main reasons are- a) To make the barbers of boycott the custom of the head of the Brahmin widow. He was totally against the custom of widowhood. b) He wanted to ensure residents of the poor young widows and also make a change in the altitude of Brahmins and other people towards widows. c) He wanted to ensure a better living condition to widows.

1.) RAMKRISHNA MISSION- Ramkrishna mission was one of the most important social reform organization in the 20 th century. The mission is named by the Indian saint Ramkrishna Paramhasma and founded by Ramkrishna’s chief disciple Swami Vivekananda . It was established by Swami Vivekananda in 1897. It worked for the society. The mission worked for providing help to the famine striken people, patients, medical help to the poor, female education and spiritual growth.
A) MOTIVES OF THE ORGANAISATION:- The organaization chiefly propagates to the hindu philosophy of Vedanta.
B) PRINCIPLES OF ORGANAIZATIONS:- The service actions are based on the message of ‘Jiva is Shiva’ from Ramkrishna and Vivekanandas message of ‘Daridra Narayana’ to specify that service to poor is service to god. The principle of Upanishads and yoga in Bhagbad Gita explained in the light of Ramkrishna’s life and teaching is the main source of inspriration for the mission. The service activities are rendered looking upon all like a real manifestation of the divine.
C) AREA OF SOCIAL ACTIVITIES:- The priniciple of workers of the mission are the monks. The missions action’s cover the following areas-
1.schooling. 2. wellbeing and health care. 3. Cultural activities. 4. Rural support. 5.tribal welfare. 6. youth movement etc.
2.) REFORMS FOR WOMEN BY SAVITRIBAI PHULE:- Savitribai Phule was an Indian social reformer, educationalist. She is considered as the first lady teacher of india. She was the wife of the great social reformer Jyotirao phule. The following are her main social reforms:-
- Savitribai phule along with her husband founded the first girls school in Pune .
- She worked to abolish the discrimination and unfair conduct of people based on caste and gender.
- In 1863 jyotirao phule and savitribai also started a care centre called ‘Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha’ the first ever infanticide prohibition home founded in India.
- She was also connected with a social reform society called ‘Satyashodhak Samaj’ in Pune.
- She was the lead of the strike of barbers which was against shaving the heads of Brahmin widows.
The Savitribai Phule is considered as one of the most efficient women inthat time. Her acts are so noticeable because the condition of women in those times were so feeble and horrible.
She empowered other women. She is regarded as an important figure of the social reform movement not only in Maharashtra but also in whole media.
