Question Number 3:
(1) Kanhoji Angre
Ans. Kanhoji Angre was the chief of Maratha Navy. He chose to side with Maharani Tarabai and attacked the territories of Shahu Maharaj.
(2) The Battle of Palkhed
Ans. In 1713 CE Nizam tried to establish his separate existance at Hyderabad. The emperor had given the Marathas the rights to recover Chauthai – Sardeshmukhi from the Mughal areas. Nizam was against it. He captured some part of the Pune Pargana. Bajirao decided to defeat the Nizam at Palkhed near Aurangabad.
(3) Balaji Vishwanath
Ans. Balaji Vishwanath hailed from Shrivardhan in Konkan. He was made a Peshwa after Shahu Maharaj was released by the Mughals. He convinced many Sardarsthat Shahu Maharaj was the real heir of Maratha empire and made them join hands with him
(4) Bajirao
Ans. He was the Peshwa after the death of Balaji Vishwanath, He expanded the Maratha empire during his term of 20 year. He was the son of Balaji Vishwanath.
Question Number 4: Give Reason
(1) Two separate Maratha States were formed.
Ans. Shahu Maharaj captured Satara and got himself crowned. The mutual opposition between Maharani Tarabai and Shahu Maharaj continued. Maharani Tarabai proclaimed her minor son Shivaji II as the Chhatrapati at Pannala in 1710 CE. This gave rise to an independent Maratha kingdom at Kolhapur.
(2) Azamshah released Chattrapati Shahu Maharaj from his custody.
Ans. Azamshah believed that if Shahu Maharaj was released, there would arise a conflict between him and Maharani Tarabai for the for the gadi of the Maratha Chhatrapati. He felt this would sap the Maratha strength and therefore, released Shahu Maharaj.
(3) Delhi needed the help from the Marathas.
Ans. The Mughal power faced the threat of the Irani and Afgani inveders from the north-west and also of local pathan, Rajput, Jat and Rohila rulers. The interval competition and tussle in the court. Weakened the Mughal powers and due to these, the Delhi Court needed help of the Marathas.
