Chapter | The Sun the Moon and the Earth |
1. Correct the wrong statements. Write down the corrected ones.
(1) The moon revolves around the sun.
Ans. The moon revolves around the earth.
(2) On a full moon day, the moon, the sun and the earth are positioned in this sequence.
ans. On a full moon day, the moon, the earth and the sun are positioned in this sequeence.
(3) The revolutionary orbits of the earth and the moon are in the same plane.
Ans. The revolutionary orbits of the earth and the moon are not in the same plane.
(4) In one revolution of the moon, its orbit intersects the earth’s orbit only once.
Ans. In one revolution of the moon, its orbit intersects the earths orbit twice.
(5) It is alright to observe a solar eclipse without protecting the eyes.
ans. It is not alright to observe a solar eclipse without protecting the eyes.
Or
It is necessary to observe a solar eclipse through dark glasses or special goggles made for that purpose.
(6) An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon is in the perigee position.
Ans. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon is in the apogee position.
Q.3 Complete the following table.
Details | Lunar Eclipse | Solar Eclipse |
Phase of the moon | Full moon day | New moon day |
Sequence | Moon-Earth Sun | Earth-Moon-Sun |
Type of eclipse | Total and Partial lunar eclipse | Total, Partial and annular Solar Eclipse |
Maximum duration of total eclipse | 107 minutes | 7 minutes and 20 seconds (440 seconds) |
Q.4. Draw and label the diagrams.
(1) Total and partial solar eclipse.
(2) Total and partial lunar eclipse.
Ans.
5. Answer the following.
(1) Why do the sun, the moon and the earth not lie in one and the same line on every full moon and new moon day?
Ans. The orbital path of the earth and the moon are not in the same plane. The moon’s revolutionary orbit makes an angel of about 5 degree with the earth. As a result, the moon interects the plane of the earth’s orbit twice during one revolution. On each new moon day, the lines joining the earth and the sun and the moon make an angle of 0 degree whereas on each full moon day, this angle is of 180 degree. For that reason the moon, the sun and the earth do not lie in one and the same line on every full moon and new moon day.
(2) When total solar eclipse occurs why is partial eclipse also seen from the earth ?
Ans. If the moon is between the sun and the earth, the shadow of the moon falls on the earth. At such a time these tree celestial objects are on the same plane and fall in one line. For that reason the places on the earth where the moon’s dark shadow and light shadow fall, experiences total solar eclipse and partial eclipse together during the same period.
(3) Suggest measures that can be taken to eradicate the superstitions related to the
eclipses.
Ans. To erodicate the superstitions related to the eclipses we can create awareness to the people about the scientific reasons behind the occurrence of eclipses and spread information to the people through television and radio. The science of eclipse should be included in school syllabus so that the students can understand the phenonenon.
(4) What precautions should we take while observing a solar eclipse ?
ans. While observing a solar eclipse, it is necessary to view the sun disc through dark glasses or special goggles made for that purpose.
(5) What types of solar eclipses will occur in perigee condition?
Ans. Total solar eclipses will occur in perigee condition and depending upon the tilt moon’s orbit, partial solar eclipse will also occur in perigee condition.
Activities:
(2) Write a note on an eclipse that you have seen.
Ans. One day morning I observed a total solar eclipse. It lasted for three minutes. The sky became dark and a twilight spreaded around us. The sun was totally covered and I observed it through dark glass. At that time all the birds begun twittering. Almost after three minutes the sun appeared again and darkness removed. Sunshines spreaded and normal day started.
Extra Questions and Answers Notes
1 .) What is perigee ?
A:- The point in the moon’s orbit where it is closest to the earth , it is
said perigee.
2.) What is apogee ?
A:- The point in the moon’s orbit where it is farthest to the earth, it is said apogee.
3.) The moons orbit intersects with the earths orbit at ___________ degree.
A:- 5 degree
4.) How does a solar eclipse happen ?
A:- The moon rotates the earth in an elliptical orbit. This rotation causes the moon to move between the sun and the earth. As a result the moon the sun and the earth move in the same line or one line.
The moon is obstructed when sunlight reaches the earth and its shadow falls on the earth. This whole phenomenon is known as solar eclipse.
5.) What is total solar eclipse ?
A:- The shadow of the moon falls on the earth to eclipse the sun.
This shaded region is less dark on the outside than the center. As a result the sun cannot be seen from the center of this shadow zone ,so it is called total solar eclipse.
6.) The eclipse in which the sun is partially covered like a disc is called _______________.
A:- partial solar eclipse
7.) How does a lunar eclipse happen ?
A:- The moon rotates the earth in an elliptical orbit. As a result of this rotation the moon moves into the shadow of the earth . At this time the sun earth and moon are in one line. The earth is located between the moon and the sun. as a result a lunar eclipse occurs when the shadow of the earth falls on the moon.
8.) What is total lunar eclipse and partial lunar eclipse?
A:- If the moon disappears completely for the shadow of the earth, then it is called a total lunar eclipse. And if a partial moon is seen it is called a partial lunar eclipse.
9.) Write the difference between solar eclipse and lunar eclipse.
SOLAR ECLIPSE |
LUNAR ECLIPSE |
A solar eclipse occurs on a new moon day |
A lunar eclipse occurs on a full moon day |
In a solar eclipse the moon is between the earth and the sun. |
In a lunar eclipse the earth is between the sun and the moon. |
The maximum duration of a total solar eclipse is 7 minutes and 20 seconds |
The maximum duration of a total lunar eclipse is 107 minutes. |
The eclipse occurs because the shadow of the moon falls on the earth. |
A lunar eclipse occurs when the shadow of the earth falls on the moon. |
10.) “Eclipse is a cosmic phenomenon not a superstition” – Explain.
A:- Lunar eclipses and solar eclipses are a cosmic event. These are not superstitions, because – these occur due to the position of the moon the earth and the sun. These cosmic events do not happen every day so people have a lot of curiosity for it.
11.) Write true or false.
a) Sun> earth > moon = lunar eclipse (true/ false) A:- True
b) moon > sun > earth = solar eclipse (true / false ) A:- false
c) earth > moon > sun = solar eclipse (true / false ) A:- true
d) sun> moon > earth = lunar eclipse (true / false ) A:- false
