1.) What are the emergency contact numbers of the following?

a.) Police Control Room – The emergency contact number of the police control room is 100.

b.) Fire brigade –  The emergency contact number of the fire brigade is 101.

c.) Ambulance – For ambulance , the emergency contact number is 102.

d.) National level single emergency number for disaster relief-  The emergency contact number of the national level single emergency number for disaster relief is 108.

2.) What first aid will you provide in the following situations?

a.) Dog bite.

For dog bite, the following first aid should be provided:

1.) The wound should be washed thoroughly with an antiseptic or a solution of potassium permanganate.

2.) The wound should be covered with a dry and clean cloth.

3.) The doctor’s help should be taken immediately.

4.) An injection of the anti rabies vaccine should be applied to the patient who has sustained a dog bite.

b.) Scratches / bleeding

For scratches or bleeding ,the following first aid should be provided:

1.) The wound should be washed with a cotton ball dipped in an antiseptic lotion.

2.) In case of smaller cut or injury, a sterile bandage should be placed to the wound ,followed by an antiseptic cream and in case of larger cut or injury , a bandage should be wrapped around the wound.

3.) In case of excessive bleeding, a clean cloth should be tied around the wound, so as to prevent further bleeding.

c.) Burns / scalds

For burns/ scalds, the following first aid should be provided to the patient:

In case of minor burns

1.) The wounded part should be carefully washed with clean water.

2.) The victim should be given water to drink.

3.) The wound should be cleaned with a cotton ball immersed in an antiseptic lotion.

4.) Oily ointments should not be applied on the injured part.

5.) The wound should be covered with a sterile dressing, in order to promote healing from the minor injury.

In case of serious burns

1.) The patient should be provided with emotional support.

2.) The wound should be covered with a clean or sterilized cloth.

3.) If possible ,the ornaments should also be removed.

4.) In this situation, one should avoid touching the skin of the patient.

5.) Oily ointments should not be applied.

6.) If the cloth is stuck to the burnt skin ,then one should not try to remove it.

7.) If the patient is in a conscious state, then water should be given to drink but any kind of stimulating drinks should be avoided.

8.) The patient should be immediately provided with medical assistance.

d.) Snakebite

For Snakebite, the following first aid should be provided:

1.) The wound should be thoroughly washed with water.

2.) The patient should be provided with immense emotional support.

3.) Aclean cloth should be tied above the wound.

4.) The patient should be provided with medical aid at once.

e.) Sunstroke.

For sunstroke, the following first aid should be provided to the patient:

1.) The patient should be made sit comfortably in a cool place.

2.) The entire body should be sponged with cold water.

3.) A soaked cloth should be placed on the neck.

4.) The patient should be given water or sherbet to drink.

5.) The patient should be lied prone, if he or she gets the feeling of vomiting.

6.) The patient should be immediately taken to the hospital in order to provide medical assistance.

3.) Write the causes of the following:

a.) Floods-  Floods is a natural disaster that occurs frequently in every parts of the world. When there is heavy rainfall in the same place ,then it leads to overflowing of water from the water bodies, thus causing a severe flooding. In big cities, the water drainage system runs short due to heavy rainfall, so as a result of which there is choking of gutters and drainage line.There is overflowing of water onto the roads and surrounding areas and water even enters to the adjacent houses.

b.) Forest fires – A forest fire refers to such a situation when there is an unwanted, unplanned and uncontrolled fire in a forest due to the result of natural or manmade activities. As for instance ,natural disaster such as thunderstorm falling on the forest trees and man-made activities such as establishment of thermal industries nearby the forest area , smoking. So, these are the following reasons which leads to forest fires . A forest fire can spread very rapidly.

c.) Land slides/ building collapse – Natural disaster like earthquake can result in landslides or building collapse . Landslides can also be caused due to the consequences of volcanic eruptions, when there is discharge of lava and gas from a volcanic vent.When low quality materials are used for building construction ,then it can result in collapse of the building.

d.) Storms – When high and low air pressure belts are formed in the atmosphere, then it can bring about certain weather changes ,which may result in strong wind or storms.

e.) Earthquakes- Both natural and manmade causes are responsible for the occurrence of earthquakes . As for example ,natural calamities like volcanic eruption and underground nuclear explosion are the various reasons which results in earthquakes.Apart from these natural calamities, there are also several man made causes such as construction of huge dams across rivers and mining which also leads to earthquakes.

4.) Answer the following questions.

a.) What is meant by ‘disasters’?

Disaster refers to any sudden occurrence that poses wide scale destruction to human life, property and societal aspects of a community or nation.

b.) What are the types of disasters?

Man -made and natural disasters are mainly the two kinds of disasters. .

  • Man- made disasters- Man -made disasters refers to those disasters that may result due to technical or human induced hazards.For instance, when houses are built with cheap quality materials, then it may result in collapse of the buildings.
  • Natural disasters – Natural disasters refers to any sudden happenings that may cause a huge destruction to the life of people and immovable assets . Landslides and drought are two examples of natural disasters.

c.) What is meant by ‘disaster management’ ?

Both disaster management and community participation are interrelated. Disaster management can be defined as ,the capability to take action in order to avert disasters and to organize plans to tackle the consequences of disaster hazards. Proper emergency planning and management is necessary ,in order to prohibit or lower the level of destruction that are caused by natural or man- made disasters.

d.) Which are the main components of disaster management?

Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery are the major components of disaster management.

Explanation

  • Mitigation –  Mitigation lowers the chances of disaster by initiating proper actions , like enhanced method of construction and to lessen the large scale damage to the people and property.
  • Preparedness – Preparedness aims to reduce the extreme severity of disasters by making them ready to face disaster and organizing plans in order to assure a fruitful response and training people to such an extent so that they can execute a plan after a disastrous hazard.
  • Response – The purpose of response is to provide immediate and effective medical and emergency equipment’s to those people who are in urgent requirement.
  • Recovery – Recovery is primarily the execution of actions which aims to assist sustainable improvement after the occurrence of the disaster.

5.) Find out about the work of a ‘Sarpa- mitra’ .

Sarpa – mitra  as the name suggests, refers to a person who is the friend of snake. Their main task is to illustrate to people about the several prospects of snakes and snake bites .They provide suggestions regarding the preventive measures and medical assistance that should be given after the snake bite. They also provide the general idea of classifying the snakes into venomous and non- venomous.

6.) Find out what a first aid kit /box contains.

A first aid box should contain a thermometer ,sterile gauze dressing,safety pins, medical tape, cotton balls ,scissors ,antiseptic wash,varying size plasters ,antibiotic lotion or cream, triangular bandage , gloves and a piece of paper consisting of a list of emergency contact numbers.
