1.) Dale-Evans

Mrs. dale-Evans is a teacher of the Greenslade school in the novel.

The first line is- ‘Denham called children at random from the audience and asked them to write the name of each teacher including the head on a slip of paper’ refers that the paper contained the names of teachers.

‘The names were called: Mr. Weston, Mrs. dale-Evans, MissPhilips’ clearly shows that Dale-Evans is one of the teachers mentioned in the list.

‘MissJoseph and Denham the two most senior students’ means that both of them are students not teachers.

‘Sapiano spoke of the study the class had made’ is a report presented by Sapiano where all reports were made by students only clearly shows that Sapiano was a student.

Miss Philips- informative, peaceful, honest, helpful, leadership

Fernman- creative, fun loving, strategic, dramatic, confident

iii.) Braithwaite faced lots of difficulties and insulting moments in his life after taking charge as teacher in Greenslade School in London east land. He met all the rude, arrogant, ill-mannered and disrespectful students at the initial stages of his journey as a teacher. He became anger and demotivated from this behaviour of students bit he realized the root cause of the problem. He found ways pf resolving the issue in his unique manner. He adopted a new approach in teaching and understood that students would response in mutual respect. Then he started addressing all students as Mr. and miss with their names to make students realize through themselves. When students became used to the new method they started developing in academic courses and well-behaved ideal students as well.

The narrator refers ‘it was entirely their day, arranged, presented and controlled by them. I observed the activities of my class as they prepared for it, noting with business like way in which tasks were allocated and fitted into a neat programme’ shows that students became responsible to take duties on their back and do things seriously. Then the line ‘the children arrived smartly dressed and polished, and miss joseph and Denham, who seemed to be important officials for the occasion’ indicates their total change in appearance, behaviour and manners. ‘Mr. Florian stood and addressed the school. He spoke at length, reiterating the aims and policy of the school and of the important contribution each child could make to the furtherance of those aims. He gave praise wherever it was indicated, but insisted that there was yet a great deal to be done, by themselves, towards a general improvement in conduct, cleanliness and the pursuit of knowledge’ the texts specifies students’ willingness for further development in their learning, manners and personality for becoming an ideal person. ‘Each class would report, through its representatives, on the studies pursued during the half year’ refers all students’ sincere responsibility to prepare their own reports. ‘Denham used the term ‘miss’ in addressing each of the senior girls’ mentions his mutual respect to all students of the school. ‘MissPegg and Jackson divided the report on geography between them’ indicates their cooperative nature to fulfil tasks together. Fernman, Miss Dodd, Miss Dare, Denham, Miss Pegg all gave their respectable reports on their chosen subjects precisely. In the overall extract of the novel we get numerous examples of tremendous change in students’ personality and behaviour which was the ultimate aim of the narrator.

iv.) A comic relief is the character who brings funny moments in a serious situation through his sense of humour. In the present extract we come to know that all students are given tasks for their half-yearly report day which was important day equally for students and teachers of Greenslade School. All students were given some individual tasks for taking over the programme and students fulfilled their responsibilities with immense pleasure to make it successful. Miss Joseph, the student of senior class introduced presenting the theme of the class which was about brotherhood of mankind and interdependency among world nations made the entire environment serious with its effectiveness. Then Jackson, Potter, Sapiano, Miss Pegg all presented their reports on their selected subjects one by one which were quite serious. Students tries to explain their understanding through simple and precise explanation. Then it was Fernman’s turn to reflect on his subject which was physiology. For his explanation Fernman asked for a skeleton to Welsh and Alison on the stage. The skeleton was hanging from a hook which was screwed into the top of the skull and revolving to the end of the cord. Fernman explains the various parts of the skeleton in a dramatic way which made the present audience laugh. The sudden shift from serious environment to tension free mood created the character Fernman a comic relief in the students’ report day programme.

a.) Denham:

Denham is one of the arrogant and rude students in Braithwaite’s class who behaved disrespectfully towards Braithwaite since beginning. He was particularly bad-tempered and ill-mannered in the school. But Braithwaite’s teaching strategy helped him to transform into a mature, responsible person who shows respect to others. He became much patient and calm person that he did all the responsibilities with great enthusiasm in students’ council report program. During his speech he was addressing all his classmates as ‘miss’ which clearly shows his respectful behaviour to others. His interest into sports and athletics developed his leadership power which he showed to host the report program and influence classmates. He is quite positive and determined person which revealed during argument with Miss Philips where he was firm in his position. At the time of his explanation of P.T class he explained his views confidently.

b.) Miss Joseph:

Miss Joseph is one of the girl students in senior class of Braithwaite’s school. She was in charge of hosting the students’ report program along with Denham. She assisted other students to accomplish their assigned tasks successfully which showed her authoritative skill. She addressed the activities of students’ council on stage with great ease. When it comes the turn of presenting report from the side of Braithwaite’s class she explained the theme of brotherhood and interdependency of mankind in front of the audience. She presented her part of domestic science in confident way which inspired others.

c.) The narrator:

The narrator of the novel is the author E.R. Braithwaite himself. The novel is based upon his real-life experiences which shows his struggles for racial discrimination and prejudice for being black man in England. He served in royal British air force when he got respect but in post-war period he found severe difficulties to find job even as an engineer. After a lot of trials and efforts he took the job as a teacher half-willingly in Greenslade School situated in east end of London. The school was famous for its specific arrogant and rude children who do not know to show respect even to their teachers. So, Braithwaite faced difficulties to deal with such kind of children as he himself was an angry person. Later he realized that he needed to understand the root cause and its solution for managing students. He then adopted mutual respect strategy and became compassionate to students. In this way, students also accepted him and started respecting him and other students as well. The bonding which he created with students transformed them from unruly children to disciple and well-behaved persons. Braithwaite’s contribution was not only bound to their classroom learning but also in their entire life. The learnings they got from Braithwaite and his classes children took it within their hearts with which they eventually became ideal persons. Braithwaite’s principal concern was the overall well-being of their students for which he took the responsibility and uplifted their personality in a broader perspective.

c.) Miss dare:

Miss Pamela dare is one of the senior girls in Braithwaite’s class of Greenslade School. In students’ half-yearly council report, dare got the chance of presenting her ideas on the subject physiology with her classmate Fernman. Mr. Fernman presented his explanation with human body skeleton on stage in a humorous way with lots of dramatics. The audience enjoyed Fernman’s presentation and it changed the mood of the entire program. But dare’s presentation was straightforward and to the point which gave insightful remarks to others. With Mr. Fernman’s confident presentation miss dare do not afraid to speak about her part. In fact she was extremely confident with her speech and explained everything in deliberate way. She explains the problems that al humans have to face due to sickness or any form of diseases. She also said the beneficial sides of exchanging knowledge, views and advice with other countries which shows her deep insightful thoughts.

d.) miss Philips:

Miss Philips is one of the three teachers who were chosen for the panel discussion of the half-yearly council report for students. When she took place for panel the narrator found her to be unintelligent in first sight. But when the questionnaire began it became clear that she was well-informed about facts. She tried her level best to answers the questions with grace and knowledge despite being unprepared which impressed both the narrator and readers. When other teachers faced troubles to handle questions she came to rescue them with her explanation and gave response in smart way without humiliating them. That gesture was impressive as a co-worker which reflected her positive personality. During Denham and Fernman’s criticism scenario she somehow managed Denham’s aggression with her clever points and polite tone. Her behaviour towards Denham calmed him down and saved the situation which proved her authoritative side as a teacher.

1.) Miss Joseph was in charge of hosting half-yearly report programme. She delivered address on the council’s purpose and its activities. 1.) He was also in charge of hosting the council report programme. He was given the task of calling all students of senior classes with respect and courtesy.

2.      Explained the theme of brotherhood and interdependency of mankind 3.criticised the pattern of learning P.T.  By giving reasons as monotonous and lack of scarcity of time.

1.      Represented topic physiology with humam skeleton in a humorous manner and dramatics who turned out as comic relief on the stage. 1.      Represented physiology after fernman in straghtward and insightful explanations.
2.      He spoke about skeleton in simple language and precise manner which attracted the audience 2.she spoke about the problems related to sickness and diseases along with the benefits of exchanging thoughts, knowledge and advice.

ii.) The half-yearly report event was a significant part of the students’ council which works on improving the academic pattern as per students’ needs. The students have to present the outcomes of their learning in front of teachers and other students. Teachers can understand the depth of students’ learning through their presentations. For that preparing report is essential with which teachers can create the teaching pattern for the remaining academic year. There was a rule of selecting panel of teachers as per students’ choice whom they can ask questions. In this way, students also got freedom in showing their views to teachers and selecting teachers for that. The programme was also a powerful platform where students got opportunity to show their skills like leadership, teamwork, creativity and others. Denham’s criticism about P.T class is a clear examples that students could raise their voice against the odds and showed their concerns by seeking fulfilment of their needs.

iii.) The half-yearly report of students’ council was arranged and presented on 15th November where MissJoseph and Denham were the hosts of the programme. The event started with the speech of Mr. Florian, the headmaster of the school who outlined the aims and policies of the school continued to Miss Joseph’s addressing the council’s purpose and activities. Each student followed their assigned tasks gracefully by representing their subjects. Braithwaite’s class was the senior most among all classes who was the last to represent in the council programme. Miss Joseph explained the effectiveness of brotherhood and interdependency of mankind that exists within our living. Potter presented mathematics and used his observations of weights and measures for greater understanding of people. Sapiano spoke about the study on pests and the damage in corps due to it. Miss Pegg and Jackson both presented geography. Jackson described the unequal distribution of vegetables and minerals in the world while MissPegg referred the state of refugees in post-war period and the rle of UNICEF in it. Fernman stole hearts of audience by his dramatics and humour during presentation of physiology with skeleton. Miss dare focused on her straightforward explanation for the problems of sickness and diseases. Miss Dodd explained the historical perspective for the need of reformation of England. Denham criticised P.T classes by addressing it as monotony of routine, lack of chances. In the panel of teachers Miss Philips answered questions with her grace and skill which impressed all. She also encouraged other teachers and responded in their sides too. Miss Philips outwitted Denham in argument with her patience and sweet tone of talking when Denham lost his argument.

iv.) A significant part of the council report programme was panel discussion which is question answer session for teachers. Teachers like Miss Philips, Mrs. Dale-Evans, and Mr. Weston were chosen for the panel by students. The questions were prepared by senior students and teachers were not aware about the question for which they were not prepared too. Out of all teachers Miss Philips was the most informative who managed to answer all questions skilfully even come to rescue other teachers as well. In this process she managed to answer with tricks for not embarrassing other teachers. Mr Weston did not give much efforts in giving answers. In fact he avoided questioning by talking loudly and giving invalid explanations. When Denham argued about P.T. classes by criticising it Miss Philips came forward and outwitted Denham with her logics.

v.) After the subjective presentations of students there was panel of teachers where teachers had to answer students’ questions. Miss Philips was one of the three teachers selected by students for the panel session. Denham’s report included criticism about P.T. classes then he asked about the needs of it where he did not find any physical growth. Being involved in athletics Denham expected regular physical activities for longer period of time which can help students. Mr. Wiston could not give any satisfactory explanation to his query when Miss Philips came to respond him. Miss Philips explained patiently that the school had limited resources with which it aims to provide maximum benefits for maximum number of students within timetable. Students who are active in other sports like Denham may not find P.T. classes useful. But there are other students who find P.T. classes helpful for them. Then Denham replied that P.T. classes can be for those students who need it and not for the students like Denham. Miss Philips responded that the school aimed to prepare students for the real world where they have to work in diversity. So, they should take P.T. classes as the exercise of mind in place of physical exercise to adjust with things. In this logical factor Denham outwitted and accepted defeat to Miss Philips patience and logical response.

The half-yearly report of the students’ council was on November 15th, and was one of the important days in the calendar of Greenslade School.

ii.) The event in the extract was held at- the auditorium of the school.

A bell was rung at 10:00 a.m. and everyone trooped into the auditorium to sit together in classes.

iii.) The incidents of the extract took place in the auditorium of Greenslade School. The extract mainly reflects the priceless bonding between teachers and students through the progress of academics and its representation. Here, students got chances to prepare their own report based upon their learning outcomes which will give clear view to teachers about students’ progress. Braithwaite’s senior students showed progress in all stages throughout the programme with their presentations and other skills. Braithwaite himself felt happy and proud of students’ extravagant transform in their overall behaviour and personality development. Their progress in behaviour, manners, personality, confidence and other characteristic traits filled the auditorium with immense positivity. Students proved to fulfil their responsibilities and courage of active participation by presenting their subjective knowledge. Braithwaite observed all the incidents throughout the programme in the seat of silence with complete silence and filled his heart with pride.

iv.) The extract took place in the auditorium of Greenslade School. The school was well-known for its ill-mannered and rude students who were disrespectful to their teachers. Braithwaite took the position of teacher for senior class after struggling a lot to get other jobs. He faced severe difficulties in professional life for racism discrimination and prejudice for being black in post-war England. He served the royal air force when he got respect but after that he faced difficulties in every place at each stage. When he entered the school he faced severe problems for students’ behaviour and got angry too. He felt helpless one point of time but he did not give up. He realised the root cause of the problem and decided solving the problem with his strategy of mutual respect. With time his students of senior class grew great relationship with him and other teachers which was proved in the presentation during the council programme. Students addressed other students with respect and explained all the activities and principles of the school with zeal. The major transformation in students’ nature and behaviour was possible for Braithwaite’s true teaching where students learn all life morals and values. In this respect, the setting of the extract is completely appropriate to explain the theme of the novel.

A4.) the half-yearly report of council is presented in the middle of academic year by students for indicating their progress. Students of Greenslade School managed and presented their individual reports for giving their views upon academic growth. Braithwaite was the responsible teacher for senior school in that school who experienced ill-treatment and rudeness from the students at the initial stages. He got angry throughout that stage and became helpless too but he did not give up. He have faced difficulties in several stages of life for racism discrimination and prejudice. He chose the job as teacher after much struggle in professional life. Even he did not get proper job despite having degree in engineering. Later he decided to find out the root cause of the students’’ problem and resolve it by himself. He chose his strategic point of mutual respect to teach students through the learning process. Eventually students grew strong bond with him that Braithwaite found major transformation in their character, behaviour and academics. Presentation of report is the showcase time of final outcome when teachers’ responsibilities are analysed. So, when the senior class’s turn came for presenting report Braithwaite became anxious to see his students’ reaction through their presentation. As he was waiting with much eagerness to see positive transformation of their students in all aspects he felt anxious to see them fulfilling their responsibilities.

c.) The students showed a remarkable change in their behaviour and were progressing in all the subjects.

iii.) The extract of the novel shed light on the special bonding between teachers and students. When Braithwaite came to Greenslade School as teach of the senior school he faced insulting, misbehave from students. He became angry at one point but did not lose hope. He decided to apply his strategy to transform students into a better version of themselves which became his aim of being a teacher. Students adopted his strategy of mutual respect which was proved the final council report day when assigned students addressed all students with respect. Braithwaite’s heart filled with pride and satisfaction after seeing his students’ improvement and immense transformation which was his actual intention. Braithwaite wanted to affect the entire life of his students with great learning including morals and values. He became successful in his aim which he realised after seeing presentation of students in the programme day. The various extracts from the text are: ‘as excited as the children’, ‘I observed the activities of my class as they prepared for it, nothing with pride the business-like way in which tasks were allocated and fitted into a neat programme’, ‘when the turn of my class came, I sat up anxiously’, ‘I felt terribly pleased and proud to see the confident courtesy with which Denham used the term ‘miss’ in addressing each of the senior girls: I felt sure that this would in itself be something for the younger ones to aim at, a sort of badge of young adulthood’.

iv.) The theme of the novel ‘to sir, with love’ is the valuable and special bonding between teachers and students that they share. It allows both students and teachers to cooperate with each other and flourish in academics. Students can understand the great philosophy of their teachers which they can apply in their learning as well. Besides it the half-yearly council report and its importance in academic progress in another theme. Teachers identified the areas of improvement in education system through the presentation of reports. Students also got the freedom of speaking out of their hearts to explain their needs and expectation from the learning pattern in that report. It enhanced the relation of teachers and students well furthermore.

v.) In the extract, Greenslade School was famous for its ill-mannered, rude and arrogant students. Students found ways of transformation with the hand of Braithwaite. They became mature, well-behaved and respectful in behaviour through Braithwaite’s strategy and teaching mode. At first, Braithwaite himself faced many difficulties to deal with his students. But later he mingled with them as friend and students appreciated him as ideal teacher. In the day of council report programme, Braithwaite got the final outcome of his prolonged hard work for students’ well-being and flourished life. Students learnt to address and treat other in respectful manner. They got the courage to open up about their queries and need towards teachers. Even they accepted teachers’ opinion after being outwitted with logic.
