Practice set – 4.2
(1) Construct a tangent to a circle p and radius 3.2 cm at any point M on it.
Solution:
Circle of radius 3.2 CM
Here, line l is the tangent of circle with centre p and radius 3.2 cm. Touching the circle at point M.
Steps to construct:
(1) Draw a circle of given radius.
(2) Take any point on circle and draw a ray from centre through that point.
(3) Draw a line perpendicular to the ray going through the point on the circle .
(4) The line is the desired tangent.
(2) Draw a circle of radius 2.7 cm. Draw a tangent to the circle at any point on it.
Solution:
L is the target touching the circle of point A.
(3) Draw a circle of radius 3.6 cm. Draw a tangent to the circle at any point on it without using the centre.
Solution:
Steps of construction without using centre:
(1) Draw a circle of suitable radius.
(2) Draw a chord CB and an inscribed angle ∠CAB.
(3) With centre A & any radius draw an arc intersecting sides of ∠ BAC. How point m & n.
(4) Using same radius and centre c, draw an arc intersecting the chord CB.
(5) Taking the radius equal to d (MN) and centre R, draw an arc intersecting the arc drawn in the proving step. Let D be the point of intersecting.
(6) Now, join CD which is the tangent.
(4) Draw a circle of radius 3.3 cm Draw a chord PQ of length 6.6 cm. Draw tangents to the circle at points P and Q. Write your observation about the tangents.
Solution:
Circle of radius 3.3 CM
Chord PQ = 6.6 cm.
Here PQ = 6.6 and r = 3.3
∴ 2r = 3.3×2
= 6.6
∴Rhord PQ is the diameter.
Line l is the tangent intersecting the circle at point P.
(5) Draw a circle with radius 3.4 cm. Draw a chord MN of length 5.7 cm in it. Construct tangents at point M and N to the circle.
Solution:
Line k and line ∠ arc tangents through point N and point M respectively of chord MN=s
(6) Draw a circle with centre P and radius 3.4 cm. Take point Q at a distance 5.5 cm from the centre. Construct tangents to the circle from point Q.
Solution:
Circle of radius 3.4 cm with P as Centre.
Q is a point outside the circle 5.5 cm from point P
M&N arc the point on tangent QM & QN respectively when it touches the circle.
Steps of construction:
(1) Constract a circle of given radius with centre p.
(2) Take a point on the exterior of given length from the centre.
(3) Draw segment PQ.
(4) Draw a perpendicular bisector of PQ.
(5) Draw a circle with radius PR when R is the midpoint of PQ and centre R.
(6) The point where the new circle use the tangent touching points.
(7) Now joint the two point with the exterior point Q to get the two tangents.
(7) Draw a circle with radius 4.1 cm. Construct tangents to the circle from a point at a distance 7.3 cm from the centre.
Solution:
Circle of radius 4.1 cm with ON centre and exterior point K such that OK = 7.3 cm
Here OS is the radius 4.1 cm.
P is the midpoint of OK
OK= 7.3 CM.
M & N arc point of contact with the circle of tangents MK & MN respectively.
