Practice Set 2.4
(1) Compare the given quadratic equations to the general form and write values of a, b, c
(1) x2 – 7x + 5 = 0
Comparing equation with ax2 + bx + c = 0 we get
a = 1, b = -7, c = 5
(2) 2m2 = 5m – 5
Or, 2m2 – 5m + 5 = 0
Comparing equation with ax2 + bx + c = 0 we get
a = 2, b = -5, c = 5
(3) y2 = 7y
Or, y2 – 7y + 0 = 0
Comparing equation ax2 + bx + c = 6 we get
a = 1, b = -7, c = 0
(2) Solve using formula.
(1) x2 + 6x + 5 = 0
Comparing equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get
a = 1; b = 6, c = 5
∴ b2 – 4ac = 62 – 4 × 1 × 5 = 36 – 20 = 16
∴ x = (-b ± √b2 – 4ac)/2a
= (-6 ± √16)/2×1
= -6 ±4/2
Either, x = -6+4/2
= -2/2
= -1
Or, x = -6-4/2
= -10/2
= -5
Are the roots of the equation
(2) x2 – 3x – 2 = 0
Comparing equation with ax2 + bx + c = a we get
a = 1; b = -3; c = -2
∴ b2 – 4ac = (-3)2 – 4 × 1 × -2
= 9 + 8 = 17
∴ x = -b ± √b2 – 4ac/2a
= – (-3) ± √17/2×1
= 3 ± √17/2
∴ Either, x = 3 + √17/2 Or, x = 3 – √17/2
Are the roots of equation
(3) 3m2 + 2m – 7 = 0
Comparing equation with ax2 + bx + c = 0 we get
a = 3; b = 2, c = -7
∴ b2 – 4ac = 22 – 4 × 3 × – 7
= 4 + 84 = 88
∴ x = -b ± √b2 4ac/2a
= -2 ± √88/2×3
= -2 ± √22 × √4/2×3
= -2 ± 2√22/2×3
∴ Either,
x = -2 + 2√22/6
= 2 (-1 + √2)/6
= -1 + √22/3
Or, x = -2 -2√22/6
= 2 (-1 -√22)/6
= -1 -√22/3
Are the root of equation
(4) 5m2 – 4m – 2 = 0
Either, x = (-1/3 + 1/3√73)/2
= 1/3 (-1 + √73)/32
= -1+√73/6
Or, x, -1/3 -1/3 √73/2
= 1/3 (-1 – √73)/2
= -1-√73/6
Are the roots of the equation
(6) 5x2 + 13x + 8 = 0
Comparing with ax2 + bx + c = 0 we ge
a = 5; b = 13, c = 8
∴ b2 – 4ac = 132 – 4 × 5 × 8
= 169 – 160
= 9
∴ x = -b √b2 – 4ac/2a
= -13 ± √9/2×5
= -13 ± 3/10
∴ Either,
x = -13 + 3 /10 = -10/10 = -1
Or, x = -13-3/10 = -16/10
= -8/5
Are the roots of the equation
