4.) Explain how the life of Stephen Hawking proves the proverb ‘Every cloud has a silver lining’. Write it down in your notebook:
Ans. The proverb ‘Every cloud has a silver lining’ means that we should never be hopeless because difficult times always lead to better days. Difficult times are like dark clouds that come overhead and because of it we barely see the sunlight. But then if we observe closely the outer edge of the clouds have a silver lining which provides some measure of light and thus hope.
The problems and difficulties of our lives are like those dark clouds. Stephen Hawking experienced the first trace of his health issue when he was just 21, a student at Oxford. On occasion he would trip and fall, or slur his speech. Later on, he was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a disease that shuts down the nerves that control the muscle activities. Doctors said he won’t be able to survive more than two and a half years. But his story is right in front of us, of how he survived and even became an inspiration for many.
Lucky enough he was that he got diagnosed at an early stage, and was treated with all advanced medical treatments and got complete support from his family, friends and students. He lived for almost half a century even after the diagnosis and made major contributions to existing theories in physics and cosmology. From his life examples and reading the lesson, we can very well say that yes, ‘every cloud has silver lining.’ It’s just that we need to observe the bright light and should never lose hope.
