(a) How does a volcano erupt? How is lava different from Magma?
Ans. Volcanoes erupt when molten rock called magma rises to the surface.
A volcano is a crack in the earth’s surface through which very hot liquid rock called lava comes out along with ash and gases. It is usually in the form of a conical mountain. There is a vertical tunnel in the mountain through which the lava comes out. When the lava is underground, it is called magma.
(b) What is an epicenter? How does an earthquake occur?
Ans. The place where the earthquake begins is called the epicenter.
An earthquake is the sudden shaking of the earth surface which is made of plates which may be big or small. These plates are called tectonic plates. There is smooth movement between the plates but at times but at times the movement is sudden and severe because of shock waves giving rise to earthquakes.
(c) How do you measure an earthquake? Also mention the damage which is caused by an earthquake.
Ans. Earthquake is measure using a scale known as Richter scale.
The roads and the Bridges get damaged. Many peoples lose their lives as they get trapped under the collapsed buildings.
(d) What are tidal waves? How does a tsunami occur?
Ans. The rise and fall of sea waves is called a tidal wave.
Earthquake or volcanic eruption can take place under the sea also and is called tsunami.
(e) Name a few areas affected by the tsunami in 2004.
Ans. The areas are Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Maldives and Somalia.
