Ans. A balanced diet is a diet that gives out body the nutrition it needs to function properly.

The five components of a balanced diet are Whole grains, Legumes and soy, fruits, vegetables, Nuts and seeds.

(b) Name the two important components needed by the body apart from nutrients. Why is it important to drink water?

Ans. The important components needed by the body apart from nutrients are Water and Roughage.

It is important to drink water because water gets rid of wastes from our body in the form of sweat and urine.

(c) Why should we maintain proper distance while reading a book.

Ans. This is because keeping it too close or too far can strain our system.

(d) What are deficiency diseases?

Ans. The diseases caused by lack of minerals and vitamins called deficiency diseases.

(e) How is Jaundice caused?

Ans. Jaundice is caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a waste material, in the blood. An inflamed liver or obstructed bile duct can lead to jaundice, as well as other underlying conditions. Symptoms include a yellow tinge to the skin and whites of the eyes, dark urine, and itchiness.

(f) How do you prevent communicable diseases?

Ans. The prevention are following:-

(i) There should be proper ventilation in the houses so that the house gets sanitized with the sunlight.

(ii) Purified water should be used for drinking. It can also be boiled and chlorinated.

(iii) Hands should be washed frequently with Soap and water and especially after passing stools.

(iv) Drains must be kept covered.

(g) Explain the different ways in which we get communicable diseases.

Ans. The different ways in which we get communicable diseases are following:-

Through direct contact:- some disease spreads through direct contact and they cause diseases like common cold, chickenpox etc.

Through food and water:- Flies and cockroach carry germs and contaminate the food and water. Some diseases that are caused by eating infected food or drinking polluted water are typhoid, cholera etc.

Through air:- When a person who has infection sneezes or coughs without covering his nose or mouth, the germs spread around and the other person gets infected.

Through animals and insects:- Mosquitoes, flies and bugs spread diseases like malaria, dengue etc.

Through infected equipments:- When blood or any other liquid from an infected person enters the body of another person some communicable disease are caused like AIDS.

(h) Why should we exercise?

Ans. This is because regular exercise tones up our muscles and improves the blood circulation in our body.

(i) Difference between communicable and non communicable diseases.

(i) Some diseases can be passed on from one person to another. They are called communicable.

(ii) Ex. Typhoid, Malaria, Virus

(i) Deficiency diseases cannot spread from one person to another, hence are called non – communicable diseases.

Ans. Children should be intake 35 g of protein.
