The ‘Chipko Andolan’ originated from an incident in a remote village called ‘Reni’ in Garhwal in the early 1970’s. A logging contractor had been allowed to cut down trees in a forest close to a village. One day, when the men folk of the village were out for work, the contractor’s workers came in the forest for cut down the trees. In the absence of the men, the women of the village reached the forest quickly hug by arms to shows oppose for tree cutting by that way they prevent trees. The forest trees were thus saved. The Chipko Movement quickly spread across all the communities for conserving forests.

Carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and water are produced by combustion of fossil fuels like coal and petroleum products. II.)  Recycle: Recycling means that we should collect material which we get from natural sources and refurnished it  again  for our needs. Like paper, plastic, glass and metals, and send them to the respective industries for recycling.

III.)  Reuse: Reuse means that material or thing we can use again. For example plastic jars, bottles of Jams can wash and use for storage of groceries, we can use toffies wrapper for decorate house.

Petroleum product-Petroleum products such as petrol and diesel are used in vehicles. kerosene and LPG used as domestic fuels for cooking.

ANS-

Coal is used to produce electricity. So, if we save electricity, then the coal consumption will be automatically reduced. Similarly the use of petroleum products also we can reduce by taking government bus trains for travelling etc. Hence the consumption of diesel and petrol get reduces. Some of the steps which can be taken to conserve energy resources like coal and petroleum are as follows:

(a) Switch off the electricity when they are not in use.

(b) Open windows and doors to take light by naturally instead of electrical light, also take natural air.

(c) we can use Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and fluorescent tube lights to save electricity

4.) The high yielding varieties of crops require much more water for irrigation.

5.) After the rainfall, Water which available in rivers by pure usable form that can polluted due Discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste. So from above reason we get to know that only rain water cannot complete water demand due to loss of water by various ways.

in 1972, the West Bengal sal forest is badly degraded. The forest officer A. K. Banerjee is get involved to villagers in the forest protection. forest area is spread under 1272 hectares. In return of protecting the forest, the villagers were given employment in both silviculture and harvesting operations of the forest.25 percent of the final harvest which produce were allowed to collect firewood and fodder from the forest area on a nominal payment so, due to forest conservation of degraded sal forest Arabari became thick and green within ten years.

35.) Explain briefly, how rainwater harvesting is done from open spaces around the buildings in city areas.

ANS-

In cities, large areas get constructed by concrete and cement hence water cannot percolate easily in the ground water. So in cities area we have to harvest water by making holes on concrete floor.  rainwater harvesting done by a constructing percolation pits, with nice holes . They are always covered with concrete. It get connected with various places by using pipe. The rainwater falling in the open spaces around buildings goes into the holes from its concrete slab cover so filteration was done. After the filteration rainwater enters into soil  then recharge well; through the outlet pipe it gradually goes into the soil.
