Labelled diagram of Response of the plant to the direction of light: Fill the conical flask with water. Cover the top of the flask with a wire mesh. Place two or three freshly sprouted beans on a wire mesh. Take a cardboard box with one side open. Place the flask in the box in such a way that the light from the window falls on the open side of the box.
After two or three days, you will notice that the shoots lean towards the light and the roots move away from the light.Now turn the flask so that the shoots are far from the light and the roots are bending towards the light.
Leave undisturbed in this position for a few days. The shoot responds by bending towards the light while the roots responds by bending away from it.
Plants exhibit tropism in response to other stimuli. Plant roots always grow downwards while shoots usually grow upwards and away from the earth. This downward and upward growth of shoots and roots respectively in response to the earth or gravity is of course geotropism.
