Labelled diagram of Plant showing geotropism

Labelled diagram of Plant showing geotropism: The upward and downward growth of shoots and roots respectively in response to the earth or gravity is obviously geotropism.

A sensitive plant moves very quickly in response to touch. The movement of sunflowers in response to day or night, on the other hand, is much slower.

Growth- related movement of plants will be further reduced. Growth of shoots towards the light is negative geotropism and downward growth of roots is called positive geotropism.

In response to other stimuli, the plant exhibits a tropic state.

Plants roots always grow downwards while shoots usually grow upwards and away from the earth. Light, or gravity, will change the direction in which plant parts grow.

These directional or tropic movements can be either toward or away from the stimulus.
