Stomata are tiny holes on the surface of leaves. A large amount of gas exchange takes place in the leaves through these small pores for the process of photosynthesis. But it is important to note that the exchange of gases also takes place on the surface of stems, roots and leaves. Because a large amount of water can also be lost through these stomatal holes. Plants close these pores when carbon dioxide is not needed for photosynthesis. The opening and closing of pores is the function of guard cells. The opening and closing of pore is the function of the guard cells. The guard cells swell when water flows into them, opening the stomatal pores. As the pores close it, the protective cells shrink.
