An amoeba is a single celled organism. Amoebas eat plants and animals. As an organism increases in complexity, different parts become specialized to perform different functions. The amoeba takes in food using a temporary finger, such as an extension of the cell surface that fuses with food particles to form a food vacuole. Inside the food vacuole, complex substances are broken down into simpler substances which then diffuse into cytoplasm. The remaining undigested food is moved to the surface of the cell and thrown out of the cell. Since the amoeba does not have a mouth, it takes food with temporary fingers, called pseudopodia. After ingestion of food, complex food is broken down into smaller molecules inside the food vacuole. This food is digested by digestive enzymes in the food vacuole. Food is absorbed in the amoeba after digestion in which the digested food is absorbed into the cytoplasm by diffusion in food vacuoles. After the absorption of food, the food vacuole disappears in the amoeba. A part of the absorbed food in the amoeba is used to obtain energy through respiration. The amoeba grows in size and then reproduces by dividing it into the two daughter cells. The remaining undigested food material is removed by the amoeba cell membrane, which suddenly ruptures at any point and expels the undigested food. It is called egestion.
