Labelled diagram of Leaf of bryophyllum with buds
Labelled diagram of Leaf of bryophyllum with buds: There are many plants in which parts such as roots, stems and leaves develop into new plants under the right conditions. Unlike most animals, plants can actually use such a method for production. This property of vegetative propagation is used in methods such as layering or grafting to cultivate many plants such as sugarcane, roses or grapes.
Plants grown by vegetative propagation can produce flowers and fruit earlier than plants grown from seed. Such methods also allow the propagation of plants such as bananas, oranges, roses and jasmine that have lost the ability to produce seeds.
Another advantage of vegetative propagation is that all the plants produced are genetically identical to the parent plant and have all the same characteristics. Take a potato and observe its surface. Cut the potato into small pieces so that some pieces have a notch or bud and some don’t. Spread some cotton on a tray and wet it.
Place the potato pieces on this cotton. Note that where the budded pieces are placed. Watch these potato chips change over the next few days. Make sure the cotton is kept moist. Buds formed in notches along the margins of bryophyllum leaves fall to the ground and develop into new plants.
