Labelled diagram of Inheritance of Traits over Two Generations

Labelled diagram of Inheritance of Traits over Two Generations: Mendel used pea plants in an experiment on the inheritance of characteristics. He discovered that all of the progeny were tall after crossing a tall and a short pea plant. Mendel characterised the tallness trait as “dominant” and the shortness trait as “recessive.”

The first generation, also known as the F1 generation, refers to the offspring of the tall and short pea plants. Mendel discovered that every plant from the F1 generation was tall. The F1 generation was then given the go-ahead to self-fertilize and give rise to the F2 generation. Mendel discovered that there were three tall plants for every one small plant in the F2 generation.

Mendel came to the conclusion that discrete units termed “factors,” which we now know as genes, are handed down from parents to children in order to determine features. He also discovered that the inheritance of one trait is unrelated to the inheritance of other traits.Mendel’s experiment revealed the existence of dominant and recessive characteristics as well as predictable patterns in the inheritance of traits.

Mendel’s experiment transformed genetics and established the basis for our current understanding of genetics and heredity.
