Our body’s metabolism produces nitrogenous substances that need to be eliminated from the body. The biological process of removing this harmful metabolic waste from the body is called excretion. The human excretory system consists of a pair of kidneys, a ureters, bladder and urethra. The kidneys are situated in the abdomen, on either side of the spine. Urine produced in the kidneys travels through the urethra to the bladder where it is stored until it is excreted through the urethra. The main function of making urine is to filter the waste products from the blood. Just as CO2 is removed from the blood in the lungs, nitrogenous wastes such as urea or uric acid are removed from the blood in the kidneys. Kidneys have filtration units called nephrons. Urine produced in the kidneys travels through the urethra to the bladder where it is stored until it is excreted through the urethra. Formation of uring a long tube, the ureter, enters each kidneys at the end. Which connects the kidney to the bladder. Urine accumulates in the bladder until pressure is released an enlarged bladder causes the urge to pass through the urethra. The bladder is muscular, therefore under nervous control, as a result we can usually control the urge to urinate.
