THE HAPPY CURE
Answer the following questions in about two or three sentences each.
1.) “The king was foolish.” Do you agree with this statement? Justify your answer quoting one incident from the text.
Answer: Yes, the king was foolish.
Yes, I agree with the statement.
The king was suffering from having nothing to do. He was being bored to death.
2.) ‘Physicians and surgeons are dolts’. Why did the king call them dolts?
Answer: Physicians and surgeons came from far and wide. They checked the king very well but couldn’t find anything. They looked down the king’s throat, they tapped his chest, and they felt his pulse. They hemmed, hawed and stroke their beards. But everything was in vain and this is why the king called them dolts.
3.) What did the simple woman say to the king after she peered into his face?
Answer: The simple woman peered into the king face and told him that he was suffering from a strange and rare disease. The disease was so rare and strange that it didn’t have any name.
4.) ‘You will be cured instantly,’ said the simple old woman. What was the cure suggested?
Answer: The old woman suggested the king that he needed sleep but one night in the shirt of a happy man and he will be cured instantly.
5.) Why did the soldiers and courtiers, messengers and heralds have to travel far and wide?
Answer: The soldiers and courtiers, messengers and heralds have to travel far and wide to bring back the shirt of a happy man.
6.) ‘I sing from joy,’ said the stranger. Why do you think the stranger sang from joy?
Answer: The stranger sang from joy because he had loved his fellow men. He owned little and wanted less. He was a simple man with less expectation so he was happy and he sang of joy.
7.) Why did the king hang his head in shame? What did he resolve afterwards?
Answer: The cure to the king’s problem was simple. He found the solution in the little boy but he was not wearing any shirt. This made the king hang his head in shame. He resolved to be a good king, to help his people, to rule wisely and well.
8.) Do you think the title of the story is appropriate? Give reasons.
Answer: Yes, I think the title of the story is appropriate. In the beginning the king had nothing to do and was bored to death. But there came a big change in him when he found that happiness lies in simple things. Then he ruled well and helped his people which was indeed a happy cure to him as well as to the people around him.
9.) “People who have nothing to do are bored to death.” Explain this statement.
Answer: People who have nothing to do are bored to death because they have lot of time to think nonsense and act foolishly. When we have work to do, we focus on the work and don’t have any unwanted thoughts. But when we have nothing to do, we think about unwanted things and create scenarios which don’t even exist. Such people have negative thoughts and make others negative.
