ARUNA ASAF ALI – THE GREAT PATRIOT
I.) Answer the following in two or three sentences each :-
1.) What kind of atmosphere existed in the country when Aruna entered politics?
Answer: When Aruna entered politics, the freedom struggle was raging and the youth were laying down their lives for the country’s independence.
2.) Why was she termed a non-conformist?
Answer: Aruna who was born into an orthodox Hindu Bengali family in 1909, broke conventions at the age of 19 and married Asaf Ali was a prominent figure in the freedom struggle and was twenty years her senior. Her marriage brought her face to face with the freedom struggle and social service which she pursued throughout her life and this is why she is termed a non-conformist.
3.) What was the impact of Aruna’s public address during the Salt Satyagraha?
Answer: During Salt Satyagraha, Aruna Ali addressed public meetings and led processions. She was prosecuted in Delhi and on her refusal to furnish security for good behaviour, was sentenced to one year imprisonment.
4.) Why had the Committee planned to hoist the tricolour? What had led to Gandhi’s arrest before the hoisting of the flag?
Answer: Aruna Ali attended the Bombay Congress Session along with her husband during which the Quit India resolution was passed on 8th August. The Committee had planned the hoisting of the tricolour at Gowalia Tank Maidan but the British got wind of the plan and arrested the top leaders including Gandhiji a few hours before the event.
5.) “There’s no arrest warrant for you, Madam.” Whom else was the warrant given to? What did Aruna persuade the British sergeant to do?
Answer: The arrest warrant was given to Asaf Ali. Aruna persuaded the British sergeant to let her accompany them to the railway station to see off her husband.
II.) Answer the following questions in four – five sentences each :
1.) Describe the scene at Victoria Terminus in the early hours of August 9, 1942, as witnessed by Aruna Asaf Ali.
Answer: Dawn was about to break and there was a cordon around Victoria Terminus to keep crowds at bay. As Aruna walked along the platform, she saw Maulana Azad sitting
at a window in a compartment of the special train and stopped to talk to him. As Congress President, he was to unfurl the tricolor at a public gathering at Gowalia Tank Maidan at 8 a.m and it was then she made up her mind on an impulse of going there.
2.) Narrate an instance from the biography to justify the fact that the British were extremely autocratic and ruthless?
Answer: During Salt Satyagraha Aruna addressed public meetings and led procession. It was then she was prosecuted in Delhi. She was sentenced to one year imprisonment. A few months later, when most political prisoners were being released, she was not released until a public agitation was launched in her support.
3.) Why was Aruna Asaf Ali considered the Grand Old Lady of the freedom struggle?
Answer: Aruna Asaf Ali was was a fiery leader who plunged headlong into politics at a time when the freedom struggle was raging and the youth were laying down their lives for the country’s independence. She was the woman with strong attitude. She was a brave woman who unfurled the tricolor at Gowalia Tank Maidan. She fought for Indian freedom struggle. She devoted her life for the welfare of the society throughout her life.
4.) What was Aruna’s advice to the freedom fighters?
Answer: Aruna advised the freedom fighters not to allow any academic arguments on questions like violence and non-violence to divert attention from the stern realities of the day. She wanted every student and youth to think and feel as soldiers of the nation is to come.
5.) What was Gandhiji’s advice to Aruna? Why could she not abide by it?
Answer: When the Government announced a reward of Rs.5000 for Aruna’s capture,Gandhiji advised her to surrender. He also advised her to take the price offered for her arrest and reserve the prize money for the great Indian cause. But Aruna surrendered only when the warrants for her arrest were cancelled on 26th January, 1946.
6.) What were the awards given to Aruna? Why were they given?
Answer: Aruna was awarded the Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1992. The country honoured her with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously.
