(B) Discuss the following questions in small groups, present your answers orally and then write them down in your notebook.
1.) What do people expect from biotechnology labs and medical councils?
Answer: People expect diagnostic facilities in clinics and affordable drugs reaching our masses. They also expect that these facilities are provided at reasonable prices.
2.) What is Dr. Abdul Kalam’s vision of India in 2020?
Answer: Dr. Abdul Kalam has a great vision of India in 2020. He would like to see a literate and poverty-free India. He dreams of an India governed by noble leaders. He dreams of a system where the work of scientists and technologists is focussed on specific missions driven by goals relevant to the common man.
3.) How did great people such as J.N. Tata, Sir Syed Ahamed Khan, etc. help India come up in the world?
Answer: Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata brought the steel industry to India even though the British rulers were not favourably disposed to the idea. He also started the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan set up the Aligarh Muslim University. Their sole motivation was to see India coming up in the world and to prove that ‘India can do it.’
4.) As mentioned in the lesson, what is it that we have? What is it that we don’t have?
Answer: We have good progress in the software sector but all the hardware is imported. We don’t have a household name in the world of computers. Our export is based on raw materials such as iron ore and alumina but we don’t have wide range of products that can be fit into an international market. We have hundreds of defence production industries but what we don’t have is the manufacturing defenceequipments like battle tank, missiles, aircrafts, guns, etc.And most important is that we have a huge manpower and basic infrastructure.
5.) What is his message to teachers and students?
Answer: Dr. Kalam tells the students to ignite their minds and think big. This would make their future better and also give them the right direction. The message that Dr. Kalam wants to give to the teachers is that they should ignite the students’ mind and nourish their brains with knowledge so that they will have a bright future.
6.) What is lacking in the discussions and debates that take place in intellectual forums, political platforms and academic institutions?
Answer: According to Dr. Kalam, there is lack of disusing the theme of a developed India in intellectual forums, political platforms and academic. We just debate and there is little or no progress.
