Understand the poem
Answer the following questions and discuss the responses with your partner.
1.) What does the poet ask us not to let die?
Answer: The poet asks us not to let our thoughts to die.
2.) “English is a game to play.” How does the poet justify it?
Answer: English is a wonderful game to play. It has some beautiful and clear words that make our thoughts clear. The brightest thoughts are to be matched with the beautiful English words.
3.) The poet speaks about matching words. What should we match the words with?
Answer: We should match the words with our brightest thoughts.
4.) What has never been said yet, according to the poet?
Answer: According to the poet, the loveliest things have never been said yet.
5.) Read lines 11 and 12 in the poem:
‘Words are the food and dress of thought
They give it its body and swing.’
What do you understand by these lines?
Answer: Words give meaning for our thoughts and it because of these words, we nourish our thoughts.

Answer: Everyone tries to hear and see fresh and beautiful things.

Answer: All that you do is match the words
To the brightest thoughts in your head
The above lines are highly provoking. It tells us how if we match our words with our brightest thoughts then the result would be good.
2.) ‘Words alone are good’ says a great Indian poet. Can you relate the meaning of the statement with the theme of the poem you have studied? Share your ideas with your classmates.
Answer: Words alone are good. With the help of good words, we can communicate well and there is proper communication. But in this poem we can see that how not only words but it should be paired with our good thoughts for clear and proper communication. The words are food of our thoughts and it is because of them we are able to touch the hearts of the people.
3.) Our philosophy advocates the oneness-unanimity of Kaya (work),Vaacha (speech) and Manasa (thoughts). How far does this poem support this philosophy?
Answer: The poem advocates the oneness of Kavya, Vaacha and Manasa. The use of words with brightest thoughts will be come with clear and true. It is because of our words and thoughts that lead to good work and the outcome is fruitful.
