3.) Name a few animals that joined the race.
Answer: Elephants, rhinoceros, gazelles, buffaloes, antelopes, deer, hares, etc.
4.) Which of the animals do you think was the sensible one? How do you justify that?
Answer: The lion was the most sensible one. It knew that it wasn’t an earthquake and all the animals had misunderstood it.
5.) What did the lion guess about the cause of the crash?
Answer: The lion guessed that no doubt a ripe bel fruit fell from above on to the palm leaf and made the crash.
6.) What was the command given by the lion to the animals at the end?
Answer: The lion commanded all the animals not to fear. As there was neither an earthquake nor any other calamity. It asked all the animals to go back to their places and live as they did before.
II .) Write the answers for each of the following in about 50-60 words :
1.) It is said : ‘The mob cannot think.’ Do you agree? If so, how does this story illustrate that? If you do not agree with the statement, how do you explain the behaviour of the animals?
Answer: Yes, I agree with the statement. In the story a hare misunderstood the falling of a huge bel fruit to an earthquake. It runs away hurriedly and when the other animals see it, they also join it. None of them think once to check the reality and confirm it. Everyone believes what is being told so there is no question of thinking wisely. This shows how in the mob there is much confusion and goes in single direction.
2.) Sum up what the lion did to verify the statement of the hare.
Answer: The lion was the wisest and smart one to guess what might have actually happened. It asked all the other animals to stay back and went with the hare that had spread the news. It then saw that a huge bel fruit had fallen on the palm shrub which made the hare think that it was an earthquake. It got it confirmed and went back to the animals. It was the strongest animal and took an active role. It declared that there was nothing to fear about and ordered everyone to back to their places and live just the way they used to.
