Answer: The products of Burbank still play an important party in daily lives of the common man. His influence prevails in the scientific community among those who work in the fields of agriculture, horticulture, forestry and livestock.
2.) Why did Burbank move from Massachusetts to California?
Answer: Burbank was brought in Massachusetts. He found that the climate of his native place was not suitable for his work. He then moved to the State of California. There the weather was mild, and the soil was rich and varied.
3.) What did Burbank call his new home? Why?
Answer: Burbank called his new home as “The chosen spot.’ He named so because he felt that it was the right place for him to carry his experiments.
4.) How did grafting help Burbank in his experimentation?
Answer: With the help of grafting, he was able to grow 526 different types of apples on the same tree. It made possible for him not only to save space but also to speed up his experiments. Instead of waiting for 15 years for a tree to give fruits, he would graft a twig from a young plant to a fruit – bearing tree and get fruits in just two or three years.
5.) In what way did Burbank save space and speed up his experiments?
Answer: By grafting, Burbank saved his space and time. He was able to grow 526 different types of apples on the same tree. By grafting a twig from a young plant to a from a young plant to a fruit- bearing tree, he would get fruits in just two or three years which otherwise would have taken 15 years.
6.) What were Burbank’s experiments on cherry, blackberry, cactus and shasta daisy?
Answer: Burbank improved the quality of cherry, a thornless blackberry, a cactus without thorns.
He also delighted flower lovers with 73 new flowers including the Shasta Daisy and a rose that bears his name.

1.) Write a note on Burbank’s early life.
Answer: Luther Burbank was born on March 7, 1849 and was brought up in Massachusetts. Since his childhood, he had passion for nature. He was attracted towards the wonders of nature and learned the techniques of growing various crops and plants during his early years. He was very much inspired by Darwin’s “Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication,” book. He then decided to devote his life to grow new varieties of plants.
2.) Describe the three techniques on which Burbank’s experiments were based.
Answer: The following are the three techniques on which Burbank’s experiments were based:
1.) First, he would collect different kinds of domestic plants and bring in many foreign varieties of plants. When they were grown under different conditions, they would prove strong, plentiful, or hard or else, show other desirable changes or new qualities.
2.) Then he grew many varieties of fruits, flowers and vegetables by changing water, food supply, temperature, light or space. Other variations were achieved by crossing plants, which had very dissimilar qualities.
3.) In the final step, he could recognise and select the plants which showed desirable changes. He could also choose them for further experiments.
3.) How did Burbank react when some of his efforts ended in failure?
Answer: Burbank didn’t lose his patience even when some of his efforts ended in failure. He had deep devotion and strong attitude that never disappointed him.

Task 1.) An outline of a story is given below. Complete the story supplying the required words and phrases.
A cap seller on his way to market and feel tired as it is very hot . He decides to take some rest under the cool shade of a huge tree. He takes a nap beside his basket of caps. When he wakes up, he is shocked to his basket empty. Initially, he thinks that his caps are stolen. But then, he hears noises above. He then looks up and finds monkeys with caps on. He takes desperate efforts to recover the caps. Then at last he snatches his own cap off his head and throws it down. And his trick worked and monkeys do the same. He picks up the caps and becomes happy to get back his caps.
Task 2. Expand any one of following proverbs into 5 or 6 sentences of your own.
1) A stitch in time saves nine.
Answer: If we want to achieve something in life we must respect time and be on time. Those who value time are always ahead to those who don’t. This proverb teaches us to value and save time and use it productively.
2) Jack of all trades, master of none.
Answer: It is good to multi-task and do many things but sometimes this may lead to loss more than benefit. This proverb teaches us to focus on one thing at one time. Though one may have knowledge of many things but he/she lacks the depth. He/she is not master of one thing.
3) Prevention is better than cure.
Answer: It is important to think of solution in the times of problem. It is important to have remedy about any problem.
4) Where there is a will, there is a way.
Answer: This proverb teaches us to be optimistic in life. We should always be determined towards what we do. When we have strong will-power, we have the strength to do anything in life.
5) All that glitters is not gold.
Answer: This proverb tells us not to judge anyone on the basis of outer appearance. Things/ people who appear beautiful outside aren’t necessarily beautiful inside too. We should always be careful from such things. We shouldn’t fall prey for things that attract us and then betray us.
