ILA) Your teacher reads a passage. Listen to it. Then answer the following questions.

1.) What did each woman claim?

Answer: Each of the women claimed that she was the real mother and so she alone had the right to own and look after it.

 

2.) What did the minister suggest?

Answer: The minister suggested the baby to be split in two, and each woman will have a half of the baby.

 

3.) Why do you think the second woman offered the baby to the first woman, after she heard the minister?

Answer: A mother doesn’t want her baby to be hurt so the on hearing the decision, the second woman agreed to give the baby to the first woman. She didn’t want her child to be hurt and die.

 

4.) How did the minister come to the correct conclusion? What was the reason for his judgement?

Answer: When the minister gave his decision to cut the baby into two halves, the first woman agreed while the second woman couldn’t bear such harm to her child so she requested that the baby be given to the first woman .The second woman was the real mother as no mother would risk her child’s life and would do anything to save her child.

THE SWAN AND THE PRINCES

 

C1) Answer the following questions and share your responses with your partner.

1.) What was the complaint of Devadatta against prince Siddharta?

Answer: Devadatta complained that prince Siddharta had taken away the swan which he shot and was refusing to give it to him.

 

2.) Why did Siddharta claim that the swan was his?

Answer: Siddharta claimed that the swan was his because he had saved its life.

 

3.) How did the bird react to Devadatta’s call?

Answer: The swan trembled and cried in fear when Devadatta called it.

 

4.) What did Siddharta say to the swan? What did the bird do?

Answer: Siddharta went close to the swan and asked it not to be afraid of him. He asked it to come near him and sit on his arms. The bird flew onto Sidhhartha’s arms.

 

5.) What made Devadatta and Siddharta approach the King?

Answer: Both Devadatta and Siddharta wanted the swan and they couldn’t decide who owned it, so they approached the king.

 

6.) How did each of them defend their actions?

Answer: Both of them gave their fair reasons to own the swan. Devadtta said that he had shot the swan so it belonged to him. Siddharta said that he had saved the life of the swan so it belonged it him.

 

7.) How did the Chief Minister resolve the dispute in the end?

Answer: The chief minister came with the best plan to resolve the dispute in the end. He asked Siddhartha to keep the swan on the stool. Then he asked Devdatta to call the swan. When Devadatta called the swan, the bird got scared and cried in fear. Then the minister asked Siddhartha to come and asked him to call the bird. Siddhartha called the bird in a kind manner and asked it to sit on his arms. The swan flew and sat on his arms. This showed that Siddhartha loved the swan and handled it in a kind way.

 

C2) Put the following events in the order in which they occur in the play and write them in a paragraph.

Devadatta shot an arrow at the bird. Siddharta nursed the bird with great care. Devadatta appealed to the King for justice. Devadatta called the swan to him. Siddharta called the swan lovingly. The swan flew onto Siddharta’s arms.

 

C3) After the swan had been saved by Siddhartha, it was very happy and wanted to thank the prince. Write an imaginary dialogue between the swan and prince Siddhartha. The beginning of the dialogue is been given.

Swan : Dear Siddhartha I want to talk to you.

Prince : Yes, my dear. What’s it? Tell me, don’t fear anyone.

Swan : Dear prince, it’s only because of your kindness, I am still alive today.

Prince : Why do you think so?

Swan : Imagine what would have happened if I had died?

Prince : Don’t you think it was my duty to protect you?

Swan : It is very great of you to think like this. Thank you very much.

Shanthigrama is a small village inChikkamagalore district. There lives a boy Nameeth. He is studying in 8th standard. He is very punctual. Every day he gets up early in the morning. His school is three kilometres away from his village. So, he leaves his home at 8.30 a.m. He goes to school on foot. He always reaches school in time.

Nameeth participates in all the school activities. He listens attentively, recites poems, solves maths sums, plays games and draws beautiful pictures. His classes usually close at 4 p.m, but he stays in the school till 5 p.m. after the classes, he sits under a tree with his friends and practises music for an hour.
