AWARENESS – Sylvia Stults
I.) We celebrate World Water Day on March 22nd. In the same way, what do we celebrate on these days?
i.) 4th February – World Cancer Day
ii.) 22nd April – Earth Day
iii.) 3rd December – People with disability day
1.) Why do we celebrate these days?
Answer: We celebrate 4th February as World Cancer Day to spread awareness about cancer and its symptoms and also to reduce the discrimination against cancer patient. 22nd April celebrated as Earth Day to increase awareness regarding pollution and to promote the ways to reduce the pollution. We also celebrated 3rd December as People with disability day to increase awareness about the issues they face due to disability and promote best practice to ease their life.
2.) Is there any need for the celebration? Give two reasons to support your answer.
Answer: Yes, there is need for the celebration because
i) Celebrate on a certain day pulls attention of people.
ii) On the day of celebration we can take special efforts to increase awareness and promote best practices.
II.) Study the pictures given below and write two sentences about global warming in your notebook:
i) When the earth will be green then global warming will not affect that much.
ii) If there will be no greenery on the earth then we might face the rage of the sun in the form of heat.
C1.) Answer the following questions in one sentence each:
1.) Name the things that are tossed on the grass.
Answer: Broken bottles, charred pieces of glass, wadded newspapers are tossed on the grass.
2.) What are sprayed on our food?
Answer: Poisons and insecticides sprayed on our food.
3) What pollution is mentioned in the third stanza?
Answer: Pollution caused by mills due to pumping out iron and by the airlines due to emitting caustic gases from fuels these pollutions is mentioned in the third stanza. Apart from it the poet says there are weapons of destruction being tested at desolate site and we are sustaining our life in this air.
4.) What risk are we taking by staying in such a world?
Answer: We are taking risk of our life by being in such world where there are human made problems. And it will be cause of destruction of humans.
C2) Answer the following after discussing with your group/ partner:
1.) What damage to nature is discussed in the first stanza?
Answer: In first stanza waste or broken bottles and charred pieces of glass thrown on the greenery and cutting out trees and constructing more concrete buildings are another damage to nature.
2.) How is our food contaminated?
Answer: Our food is getting contaminated by the poison and insecticides sprayed on it.
3.) Describe the way the air is being polluted.
Answer: Our air is being polluted by the mills pumping out iron expelling and airlines emitting caustic gases from fuels.
4.) In what way can we solve these problems?
Answer: We can solve these problems by raising awareness, dumping waste at right place and following best practices like reduce, reuse and recycle. We can also follow organic farming and rainwater harvesting.
C3) Answer the following after discussing in groups:
1.) What message does the poem give?
Answer: The poet is saying that we are living in the polluted environment and before the condition of the earth get worse we have to do something about it. We have to find the way to control pollution and we can do it by implementing best practices to clean the environment and we should do it as our responsibility.
2.) Write at least five environmental awareness statements displayed in public places.
Answer: Save water, save life
Avoid plastic, save rivers
Go green, plant tree
No life-zone, without ozone.
