C1.) Answer the following questions in one or two sentences each :

1.) Where did the disciples of Dronacharya assemble for the test?

Answer: The disciples of Dronacharya assembled in the large open ground in front of the Hastinapura palace.

 

2.) What was the target set up by the Guru?

Answer: The target set up by the Guru was an artificial bird (made of wood and

grass) on top of a branch of the tree.

 

3.) What was Yudhishtira’s reply when Drona asked him what he saw on the tree?

Answer: When Drona asked Yudhishtira what he saw on the tree, then he replied that he could see the tree, the bird, his brothers, other friends and everything.

 

4.) Was Drona happy with the answers given by many of the princes? Why/why not?

Answer: No, Drona was not happy with the answers given by many of the princes. Drona wanted everyone to focus only on one thing and not other things.

Answer: Arjuna passed this test.

Answer: When Arjuna said that he could only see the bird and nothing, then Drona was happy with his answer.Arjuna had concentration and focus which are the keys to success and these qualities impressed Drona. This is why Drona asked Arjuna to shoot the bird.

Answer: Duryodhana didn’t congratulate Arjuna on his achievement. Duryodhana was jealous of Arjuna’s achievement.

Answer: When Drona was washing his feet one day, a crocodile grabbed his foot.

 

9.) Who drove the crocodile away? How?

Answer: Arjuna drove the crocodile away. He set an arrow to his bow, shot it into the stream aiming at the right point. It infused the crocodile and drove it away.

 

10.) Who do you think was the most favourite disciple of Drona? Why?

Answer: Without any doubt, I think Arjuna was the most favorite disciple of Drona. He was not only brave but also he had qualities of focus and concentration which made him stand apart from the other disciples.

 

11.) What is important to succeed in life?

Answer: Concentration and focus play key role in achieving success in life.

 

C2.) Discuss in small groups and answer the following:

 

1.) How did Drona test the princes’ skill and ability in archery? Narrate any one incident.

Answer: Drona was a preceptor in Hastinapur. Once he ordered his disciples to assemble in the large open ground in Hastinapur palace. To test the princes’ archery skills, he set up an artificial bird on top of a branch of the tree. Then he showed a big tree at the end of the ground and asked everyone what things they could see. One disciple said that he could see its trunk, branches, the sky over it and the ground below it. Yudhishtira said that he could see the tree, the bird, his brothers, other friends and everything. Many disciples came and answered what they saw. But none’s answer could satisfy Drona. Then, same question was asked to Arjuna, he said that he could see only the neck and the head of the bird. This impressed Drona very much. Arjuna proved himself by shooting the false bird’s neck.

 

2.) How did Arjuna prove his skill in archery?

Answer: When Drona decided to test archery skills of his disciples; he set an artificial bird on a branch of a tree and asked his disciples what they could see. It was only Arjuna who said that he could only see the bird’s neck and head. This impressed Drona. Arjuna hit the arrow and fell down on the ground. Arjuna’s focus and concentration made Drona amazed by his skills. After this incident, there was another incident which proved how great archer Arjuna was. One day, Drona’s feet was grabbed by a crocodile. The boys who were standing near were confused and couldn’t do anything. Again, Arjuna proved his skills and very smartly set an arrow to his bow, shot it into the stream aiming at the right point. His attack was so clear that it drove the crocodile away without hurting his guru. The two mentioned incidents proved that Arjuna was truly a great archer and no one could pass him in his skills.

S1.) Narrate the story in your own words.

This story is about Arjuna’s archery skills and his focus. Drona was preceptor at Gurukul of Hastinapur. Kaurvas and Pandavas were his disciples. Once Drona wanted to test the archery skills of his disciples. He set up an artificial bird on a branch of a tree. He ordered his disciples to tell what they could see. Some told him that they could see the branch, some told that they could see the sky. No one could impressed Drona with their answers. When Arjuna’s turn came, he answered that he could see only the neck and the head of the bird. This impressed Drona very much. He asked to hit his arrow and Arjuna very rightly hit the arrow on the bird’s neck. The bird fell down. Drona told everyone that it was Arjuna’s focus and concentration that made him achieve his goal. One day, Drona’s feet was grabbed by a crocodile. He pretended to be in pain and asked for help from the boys. No one could help as they were confused what to do. Arjuna saw that and without any delay he set his arrow to his bow, shot it into the stream aiming at the right point. It infused the crocodile and drove it away without hurting his guru, Drona. The story shows how Arjuna’s focus and concentration made him the best archer in Hastinapur.
