Preparatory Activity :

1a.) Discuss in pairs: What are some of the useful inventions made by scientists? How useful are these inventions?

1.) Thomas Edison invented electric bulb. Because of the bulb we can work and study even in the late night.

2.) Alexander Graham Bell invented telephone. It is one of the most important inventions in the field of communication. We use telephone for communication purpose.

3.) Guglielmo Marconi invented radio. Radio is one of the most important tools of media. It is useful in giving information and keeping us updated in current affairs.

4.) Charles Babbage invented computer. With the use of computer we can many things.

 

1b.) What would our life be like without inventions? Discuss how our life will be if we do not have the following (you can speak in your mother tongue):

  • the electric light _ have to study in the dark.
  • the telephone _ have to write letter.
  • the computer _ have to maintain data and information in a book.
  • the bicycle _ have to walk.
  • the television _ have no source of entertainment and news.
  • the medicines _ have to bear the pain.

2.) Make a list of all the words that come to your mind when you hear the word ‘lighthouse’. Read out the list to the class.

C1.) Discuss in pairs and answer the following questions:

1.) Why was Rajiv thrilled?

Ans . Rajiv was thrilled because his father promised him that he would take him out on a visit to the lighthouse.

 

2.) What is a lighthouse?

Answer: Lighthouse is a tall, strong building in the shape of a tower with powerful lights at the top.

 

3.) How are lighthouses useful to sailors?

Answer: The lighthouses help the sailors to know where the land is and what place they are near. Sometimes the sailors are on the seashore and sometimes in the sea. They are in places which are dangerous to ships and the lighthouses help to warn and guide the sailors.

 

4.) Where are the lighthouses built?

Answer: The lighthouses are built on the seashores.

 

5.) What did the people use in lighthouses before the invention of electricity?

Answer: Before the invention of electricity, people used wood fires that would be lit in high places on the shore. Later, a large number of candles were used with glass around them to keep out the wind.”

 

6.) How was the first lighthouse built?

Answer:  Once, many fishermen were lost in the sea and were unable to return home. The people who were on the land were worried about them and felt helpless to guide them. It was then, a group of clever young men hit upon an idea. They collected a few huge logs and lots of dry branches and set fire to them. In the early hours of next morning, the fishermen sailed home. They had been guided from the land and saved only because of the light of that fire which they had seen from a distance. In this way the first lighthouse was built.

 

7.) Find words, from the story, which mean the opposite of the following:

C2.) S it in pairs. Answer each of the following questions in a sentence:

 

1.) Rajiv was thrilled because his father was going to take him out on a visit to the lighthouse. What incidents in your life made you thrilled? Narrate them.

Answer: When I visited Salar Jung Museum for the first time, I felt very much thrilled and excited. The things like the modern paintings, ivory objects, Chinese art, furniture, etc made me feel amazed at the human creation.

 

3) Lighthouse is not an invention made by any single person. In the same way, there are many other such inventions which were made with the collective effort of many persons. Make a list of them and discuss in the class.

Answer: Marconi and Nikola Tesla both put their efforts to develop radio.

Wright brothers invented aeroplane.
