MY PEOPLE
a) Write the names of the professions:

Answer: Cobbler

C1.) Answer the following in a word, a phrase or a sentence each :
1.) Who are referred to as ‘they’ in the poem?
Answer: Workers who work in various fields are referred to as ‘they’ in the poem.
2.) “They weave cloth, but they go naked.” What does this line mean?
Answer: People who weave cloth get very less income so much so that they cannot even manage to fulfill their basic need like clothing. They weave clothes for others but they cannot even afford to get dress for themselves.
3.) Why do these people sigh?
Answer: After working so hard and taking efforts, these people go back home with empty hands, so they sigh.
4.) Who does the poet refer to as God-loving men? What do they do?
Answer: The self-claimed god’s representatives are referred to as God-loving men. They are selfish and only think about earning more, they never think of the people who are poor and hard working.
5.) Is the poet sympathetic to them? How do you know?
Answer: Yes, the poet is very much sympathetic to them. He calls the hard working people as “my people.”

1.) Who is the speaker in this poem? Who is he talking about?
Answer: The poet, Dr Siddalingaiah is the speaker in this poem. He is talking about the poor and hard working class of people.
2.) What, as mentioned in the poem, are the different activities done by them?
Answer: The different activities done by them are carrying stones for building sites, excavating gold, weaving clothes, ploughing the fields, cutting the crops, building the shops and bungalows and making footwears.
3.) Why does the poet have sympathy towards these people?
Answer: These people work very hard to make others’ lives better but in return what they get is very little. These people work day and night but they don’t get enough profit, so the poet sympathizes with them.
4.) Isn’t it a pity that some people build the shops but get into heavy debts? How does this happen?
Answer: Some people build the shops by taking loans and fail to repay it. When the time comes to repay it, they give the money from the workers’ pocket by not paying enough to the workers. In this way, there is an injustice caused to the workers.
5.) What do you think should be done to solve the miseries of these people?
Answer: There should be strict law against those who don’t pay enough to these people. There should be strict policy in order to keep an eye on the activities which is against the workers.

Reason – The hard working class of workers work day and night to weave clothes, but due to their less payment they cannot even afford to wear clothes for themselves.

They heave a deep deep sigh
Reason – After working hard day and night, the workers don’t get anything in return, they go home with empty hands and all they do is heave a deep sigh. This is such a painful thing to face.
3.) When they collapse on the street, they don’t cry for
Help, they suppress their cries
Reason – When the hard working workers fall on the street by working hard, they don’t cry for the help but they suppress their pain. This shows how miserable is their condition.
4.) They fall at other’s feet, and they get kicked
They are so devoted,
Reason – These people work hard and in return all they get is insult and pain.
5.) They listen to anything said to them
They live on air,
Reason- The above lines show how pathetic the condition is of these people. They obey to everything yet they are not rewarded with anything in return.
