1.) What are the various activities involved in farming?
Answer. The various activities involved in farming are ploughing the fields, sowing seeds, watering plants, reaping harvest etc.
2.) Where is the speaker sitting?
Answer. The speaker is sitting in a porch way which is cool.
3.) What time of the day is it?
Answer. It is the time just before dawn when all farmers finished their working in the field. They prepare for going back home after sunset.
1.) ‘But one sower lingers still.’ Why does the sower ‘linger’? What does the use of the word ‘linger’ suggest about the sower?
Answer. One sower lingers still while shadows fill the land after sunset. He wants to see his corps closely and spend extra time within nature in his land.
The word linger suggests about the sower that he is so much patient to spend extra hour for taking care his corps after hard work for whole day long. He does not show any hurry to go back home rather he was in peace amidst the field.
2.) Why does the speaker feel a thrill on seeing the sower now? Identify the words used by the poet to establish this.
Answer. The speaker feels a thrill on seeing the sower because he was patient and hard working. He was old and wore old clothes but his passion towards work was amazing. To see his zeal and patience towards his work the speaker feels thrill.
Old, in rags, he patient stands, looking on, I feel a thrill, black and high his silhouette dominates the furrows deep- these words used by the poet to explain his thrill.
3.) How does the sower go about performing his task?
Answer. the sower stands patiently in his old rags when everyone left the field for going back home. With his black and high silhouette he dominates the deep furrows within field. Then he gets ready to start his task of sowing seeds in the field.
4.) In normal circumstances pearls, diamonds and rubies are referred as precious. In this poem ‘grain’ is referred to as precious. Why does the poet consider grain precious?
Answer. The poet considers grain as precious because farmers grow it with their long hard work and dedication to farming. Grains are the result of their prolonged work in all steps related to farming. It provides food for the country people who depend on farmers. So, grains were equally precious to the poet like pearls, diamonds and rubies.
5.) The poet speaks of the sower as ‘old and in rags’ in the beginning of the poem. How does this opinion change towards the end of the poem? Pick out the lines from the poem.
Answer. The poet thinks the sower is old in rags which explains the possibility of his being unable to work in the field properly. But he becomes surprised soon to see his patience and zeal in working hard even after dawn. His image for the sower changes at the end of the poem when he sees him set his hands on the precious grain. He scatters grain after sunset when the darkness falls. In the deep darkness the poet observes his height which seems to touch the starry sky high above.
6.) Bring out the contrast between the poet and the sower.
Answer. The poet was sitting on a porch way after the sunset when the cool breeze was flowing around. The working hours was finished for farmers and they were ready to go back home. The poet felt to sit around the field to cherish the beauty in dark shadows. Then he noticed an old sower who was still not tired and longed to work. He was amazed to see his dedication and patience towards his work. He waited till sunset for scattering the seeds in soil so that it sowed faster in the break of night. The poet got true sense of sowing and he compared grains with valuable gems.
