(14.) The speed of revolution of the Earth is ___________

A:- 96000 km per hour

Answer the following questions (marks 2)

(1.) What is known as Geoid?

Ans. The spherical shape of the Earth which is slightly flattened of the poles and bulges of the equator is known as Geoid. The word Geoid means ‘ Earth shaped ‘.

(2.) Who first attempted to find out the size of the Earth?

Ans. Solely based on the angle of incidence of the sun’s rays , Eratosthenes , the Greek philosopher calculated the circumference of the Earth to be 2,50,000 stadia. Which is surprisingly close to it’s real circumference.

(3.) What is latitude?

Ans. Latitudes in the angular distance to any point on the surface of the Earth from the centre. By joining the same angular distance, one get the lines of latitudes.

(4.) What do you mean by the axis of the Earth?

Ans. If someone insert a straight pole through a straight pole through the centre of a ball and let it spin. This pole is the axis of the ball. Imagine there is a straight pole passing through the centre of the Earth. This imaginary line is the axis of the Earth. The Earth rotates on this tilted axis.

(5.) What is North pole and South pole?

Ans. Latitudes are marked North and South of the equator up to 90° . 90° North latitude is known as the North pole and 90° south latitude is known as South pole.

(6.) why on one side of the Earth is facing day when the other side is night?

Ans. The source of the light for the Earth is sun. We known that the shape of the Earth is spherical and it spins on it’s own axis. The spinning of the Earth on it’s own axis called rotation. The part of the Earth facing the sun due to rotation gets illuminated and experiences day. As the opposite face does not get sunlight, night is experienced there. Day and night is experienced one after the other due to the rotation of the Earth.

(7.) what is revolution?

Ans. Earth rotate on it’s axis, the Earth also moves around the sun. The movement of the Earth around the sun is called revolution.

(8.) Which year is considered as leap year?

Ans. To complete one revolution, the Earth takes 365¼ days. But a year normally has 365 days. The remaining ¼ part of a day will be considered as a full day once in every 4 years. Thus every fourth year has 366 days and is called a leap year.
