Answer: The surveys were begun under the stewardship of Col. William Lambton in 1802.

(3) Who assists the Lambton in 1818 for those surveys?

(6) What are toposheets or topographic maps?

Answer: ‘Topography’ is the English term, derived from Greek term ‘Topo’ means ‘Place’ and ‘Graphie’ means ‘to draw or to write’. Thus the meaning of ‘Topography’ is ‘Map’, also known as toposheets.

(7) What are the important features of topographic map?

Answer: The topographic map contains the important features such as undulations of the terrains, Rivers, other water bodies, forest, agricultural land, barren land, villages, towns and transport and telecommunications systems.

(8) What are the uses of Topographic maps?

Answer: Topographic maps are used for various purposes,

 (1) To analysis of the physical and cultural features of the earth surface.

 (2) For military operations and in the preparation of military maps.

(3) Identification and studying of the natural and cultural resources of region as part of economic planning.

 (4) For urban planning.

(9) How toposheets are prepared for the Whole world ?

Answer: Toposheets for the whole world have been prepared in several sheets of same size and shape. The whole world is picturized in 2222 sheets as follows. There are 1800 sheets for region between 60° North and South latitude, 420 sheet for regions between 60° and 88° latitude in both hemispheres and 2 sheet for both the poles.

(10) Define the terms present in to posheets

1) Contour lines

2) Spot height

3) Benchmark

4) Triangulated height

Answer: (1) Contour lines: Contour lines are the imaginary lines joining places having the same elevation above sea level.

(2) Spot height: Spot height represents the actual height of a place by recording the height in digits beside a black dot. Occasionally, only height is being recorded and with absent of black dot.

(3) Benchmark: BM represent the height of reservoirs and the prominent buildings. BM means Benchmark.

(4) Triangulated height: Height of places estimated through trigonometric survey are recorded in maps using ‘∆’ this symbol.

(13) Which symbols are used for the different office in topographic maps.

Answer:

(1) Post office – PO

(2) Telegraph office – TO

(3) Post and telegraph office – PTO

(4) Police station – PS

(5) Inspection benglow – IB

(6) Rest House – RH

(14) What are eastings?

Answer: Eastings are north-south lines in the toposheet. As these lines moves towards East their value increases. At the immediate left side of the geographic features the value of the eastings perceived to identify a location.

(15) What are northings?

Answer: Northings are lines from the east to west in toposheet. The value of the northings increases towards the north. To identify a location the value of the northings immediately to the south of the feature counted.

(16) What are Contour lines?

Answer: Contours lines are the lines drawn on the maps. These lines are connected by those places which having a equal elevation from the sea level.

(17) Write a short note about Contour interval.

Answer: The interval of toposheets of the contour is in 1:50000 scale, it is generally 20 metres. These values of contours are analysed and the altitude of the plaes represented in the maps can be found out. Countours with 100 metre interval are used to understand the relief of the elevated landforms.

(18) What is assessed from the contour lines in topographic maps.

Answer: The altitude of the place, the nature of the slope and the shape of the landform are assessed from the contour lines in topographic maps.

(19) What are the methods of assessing the topography?

Answer: There are two methods of assessing the topography.

Directly from the contours: In this method a paper strip placed on a contour pattern of which the topography is to be assessed and the strip is marked with A at one side and B at another side the values of the of the contour lines are marked and labelled and lines are drawn upon it.

By tracing out the contour lines: In this method the contour lines copied on a tracing paper and transferred on another paper. Then Values of the contours are marked on both the Y-axis in an appropriate scale. And equal values are connected by narrow lines on both the Y-axis. The vertical lines where contours cut across AB are drawn and the points where the vertical lines intersect the horizontal lines and the points are connected with smooth curves and shade the area using pencil and thus the shape of landform has drawn.
