1.) Kepler’s first law ( Law of orbit ):
- According to Kepler all the planets are revolving around the sun in an elliptical orbit and the sun is being one of their focii of that ellipse. This law gives information about the motion of planets in elliptical orbit. And hence this law is also called as law of orbit.
2.) Kepler’s second law ( Law of equal areas ):
- According to second law of Kepler the radius vector drawn from the sun to the planet covers equal area in equal interval of time and this is happening in each case. It means that the areal velocity of the radius vector drawn for each planet is constant.
- Hence, this law is also called as law of equal areas.

3.) Kepler’s third law ( Law of period ):
- According to Kepler’s third law, the square of the time period of the revolution of each planet around the sun is directly proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of that ellipse. As this law gives the information about time period and hence it is called as law of period.
- The Kepler’s third law is also called as harmonic law.
Note:
- Kepler’s laws are mainly used to find the orbits of the planets or stars around the sun. Sometimes they are used to find the orbits of asteroids and comets also.
- From the Kepler’s third law of planetary motion, we can find the distance of any planet from the sun also.
