The Bird of Happiness Class 10 English SSLC Study Material / Notes / Question Answer
Think about the text
1.) “Will I ever make it?” Why did Wangjia feel so?
Answer: Wangjia was a bright boy who had set out to find the bird of happiness. During his journey, the first monster punished him. After the first hundred miles of walking, the soles of his boots were ripped apart by the stones. After the second hundred miles, his feet were cut to pieces. After the third hundred miles, his hands were torn to shreds. In the first phase itself, he had horrible experience which made him lose hope and wonder whether he could ever make it to the bird of happiness.
2.) What hardships did Wangjia undergo on his way to find the Bird?
Answer: In the search of the bird of happiness, Wangjia faced many hardships. There were three monsters who challenged him and when he didn’t accept it, he was punished each time with horrible things. The first monster said that if he wanted to find the bird of happiness then he had to kill Lousang’s mother. Wangjia didn’t say yes to it and he was punished in cruel manner. After the first hundred miles of walking, the soles of his boots were ripped apart by the stones. After the second hundred miles, his feet were cut to pieces. After the third hundred miles, his hands were torn to shreds.
After this, there came another monster who asked him poison old gaffer Silong. To this also, Wanggjia said no and the effect was horrible. After the first hundred miles, his stomach began rumbling with hunger; after the second hundred miles, he was so hungry that his head swam and he began to see stars. After the third hundred miles, he was so hungry that there was a sharp pain in his guts, as if they were being cut by a knife. He was starved to death.
After this, there came the third monster. He asked Wangjia to bring Bhima’s eyeballs. He didn’t agree and the result was that the monster made Wangjia blind. He continued to go in the direction of the sun. Groping his way with his hands on the ground, he crawled another nine hundred miles. He clambered to the peak of a snow-covered mountain, and there he found the bird of happiness.
3.) What changes came over Wangjia as the Bird of Happiness caressed him?
Answer: When the Bird of Happiness caressed Wangjia, magical changes took place. His eyeballs flew back to their sockets, and he saw much more brightly than before. All his wounds were healed and he was stronger than ever.
4.) Wangjia was face to face with three monsters. Each monster had his own wish. Wangjia too had a wish. What contrast do you draw between the wishes of the monsters and the wish of Wangjia? What does the folktale suggest with this contrast?
Answer: The first monster wanted Wangjia to kill Lousang’s mother. But Wangjia didn’t kill saying that he too had a mother and he would never kill another’s. It shows the cruelty of the first monster and kindness of Wangjia. The second monster asked him to posion old gaffer Silong. But again Wangjia refused to do so by saying that he loved his own grandpa and wouldn’t kill another’s. This shows the heartlessness of the second monster and sensitivity of Wangjia. The third monster asked Wangjia to bring Bhima’s eyeballs. Wangjia refused by saying that no has right to destroy a girl’s pretty eyes. We can see how there is ruthlessness and cruelty in the monsters whereas Wangjia represents everything that is good and kind. The monsters indicate all the evil whereas Wangjia is a symbol of goodness.
5.) Read paragraph 1 and paragraphs 28 and 29. What do you understand from them about the meaning of real happiness?
Answer: In the first paragraph we come to know how the people of Tibet were poor. They lacked everything and most important they didn’t have the beautiful nature. In the paragraphs 28 and 29, we can see how there is warmth and happiness only because of nature. There are forests, flowers, field and rivers. Everything was in abundant and there was happiness.
