Answer: Don Anselom’s appearance was a bit shabby. His coat was old and faded. He carried a cane, but it was only the skeleton of a worn-out umbrella. He bowed to everyone he met and there was a boy who would always follow his orders.
2.) Whose argument do you agree with? Don Anselmo’s or the story teller’s? Give reasons.
Answer: If with go with the legal terms, the story teller was right. Once someone has sold the property to someone else, everything becomes of that person. So when Don Anselmo says that trees belonged to the children it is kind of illegal. But on the other hand if we are to see Don Anselom’s viewpoint, we understand that he is the man of principles. He didn’t even take the double amount which was offered to him. He had planted the trees with care so he was right in what he said.
3.) Don Anselmo was passionate about his land and the children of Rio en Medio. Which details in the text support this statement? Write them.
Answer: From the text we get to know that Don Anselmo was very passionate about his land and the children of Rio en Medio. He had been there since he took the possession of the house. It was inherited to him from his mother. He was the oldest man there and everyone was nieces and nephews of him. He felt that the trees belonged the children of Rio en Medio and not him. A tree was planted every time a child was born.
4.) Don Anselmo’s reaction to the offer of more money was not expected. Justify this statement.
Answer: When the story teller offered the double money to Don Anselom, Don instead of being happy felt insulted. He felt insulted because he was man of principles and was not greedy at all. Earlier it was decided to sell his house for twelve hundred dollars and he was adamant on the same amount. Anyone would have felt happy if he/she gets double amount of the decided amount but here Don Anselmo proved that money didn’t matter to him but principles did.

Answer: Both Don Anselmo and the Americans were generous in their ways. Don Anselmo was generous enough to not accept the double money offered to him. Also he felt the trees belong to the children of Rio en Medio. On the other hand, the Americans were also generous in buying the tree one by one from the children of Rio en Medio. They realized the generosity and feelings of Don Anselmo towards his people so they readily agreed to buy the trees.
8.) At last, the problem of ownership was resolved. But it took a long time. What might be the reasons for it? Write a paragraph on it.
Answer: The Americans were generous enough that they agreed to buy trees separately from each one by one. It did take a long time to convince but finally it happened.
