I.) Answer the following questions briefly:

1.) Give an account of Dicky Dolma’s hardship and challenges she faced before she was qualified for this venture of scaling the peak.

Answer: From the very young age, Dicky Dolma had faced many hardship and challenges. At the age of eleven, she lost her mother and elder brother. This had deep impact on her. When she was getting ready for the final frontier, her father was bedridden and a lot of money was needed for his treatment. Despite all the hardship, she never gave up and practiced for hours to achieve her goals.

 

2.) How has Dolma described her preparedness for the task of scaling Mount Everest?

Answer: Dicky Dolma had urge to climb Mount Everest since her childhood. It was the first thing which she saw after getting up every day. Her desire became stronger when she came to know about the newly-opened mountaineering institute in Manali. At the age of 16, she took up the basic mountaineering course at Manali in 1991. There she scored ‘A’ grades. She didn’t stop there, her name was all-India expedition to Mount Everest list. It was only her hard work and determination that paid off and made her successful.

 

II.) Answer the following questions:

1.) “With zeal and determination there is nothing that one cannot achieve”. What else do you think are necessary to achieve, besides zeal and determination? Have a discussion in the class.

Answer: Zeal and sheer determination definitely make one successful in life. These two factors help one achieve goals in life. Apart from these, there are many things that lead us to success. Honesty, passion and optimism are other factors with the help of which we can achieve anything. There is nothing that can stop us if we follow all these positive approaches. If we possess honesty, we work towards our work in more loyal manner. We stick to our work with complete dedication. It is also important to be passionate towards whatever we do. Unless we are passionate we won’t be able to give our hundred percent. If we are negative and doubtful about our efforts, nothing will work. We have to be optimistic in each step and only then we will be able to achieve the goals set for us.

 

2.) Narrate the adventurous story of Dicky Dolma in your own words.

Answer: Dicky Dolma is the youngest woman to climb Mt. Everest at the age of 19. Despite financial and emotion hardship, she managed to gain the success. She believed in herself and her efforts paved way for her huge success. Since childhood she had urge to climb those mountains. At the age of 16 she took up the basic mountaineering course at Manali in 1991. Her hard work got her ‘A’ grades. Her name was in the list of all-India expedition to Mount Everest. For the final selection, however, she made three successful expeditions to different mountains. And the day came when she climbed on Mt. Everest on May 10, 1993. It was indeed a dream come true and the feeling was beyond words.
