Quality of Mercy Class 10 English SSLC Study Material / Notes / Question Answer
Understand the poem
1.) Mercy is compared to something in the first two lines of the poem/ speech. What is it? How is this comparison apt? Justify your answer.
Answer: In the first two lines, the poet compares mercy with to gentle rain from the heaven. The quality of mercy is never affected by anything. It is gentle as the raindrop and is sent from the God himself. Just like rain mercy should be a natural thing.
2.) The speaker says that mercy is twice blessed. What does she mean by this?
Answer: When the speaker says that mercy is twice blessed she wants to draw attention of the giver that as he gives he receives. Mercy not only blesses the receiver but also the giver. When the receiver of mercy is blessed with gratitude in his heart then the giver has satisfaction of being’s messenger.
3.) ‘Sceptre shows the force of temporal power’. In contrast, what or whose quality does mercy stand for?
Answer: If scepter shows the force of temporal power then mercy shows permanent worth of the king. King’s mercy flows from his heart and make him God-like. With the quality of mercy one can be monarch. Mercy is the most powerful thing one can have.

Read and appreciate
1.) Work in pairs/groups and answer the following questions.
Read the first two lines. Explain the simile (comparison) briefly.
Answer: In the first two lines, the poet compares mercy with the gentle rain from heaven. Just the way rain is the natural thing the same way mercy is the natural quality of human beings. The quality of mercy is never affected by anything. It is blessing for everyone.
2.) How do you interpret the speaker’s interpretation of mercy as twice blessed?
Answer: If someone shows mercy to other person there is blessing. If mercy is shown to someone, the giver is blessed, in the same way the person who takes mercy is also blessed. This implies that there is twice blessing.
3.) The speaker compares the power of the king with the power of mercy, saying that mercy is the mightiest of the mightiest. How does she justify this? (Read the last part of the text carefully)
Answer: The kings rule. Their scepter shows their power. They rule with the use of their power of words. They can create fear. But when the same king showers people with mercy he becomes God to everyone. Mercy overpowers everything else and even the king is changed into the God. It has the power to overpower temporal power so the poet says that it is mightiest of the mightiest.
5.) This poem has fourteen lines. But it is not a sonnet. Look at the ending of the lines and justify the above statement.
Answer: The poem has free verse. The first twelve lines are divided into three quatrains with four lines each. The first three quatrains highlight the theme of the poem. The final two lines are called couplets. This type of sonnet is called as Shakespearean Sonnet.
